I don't know...I think it was sometime in July last year the Buccos won 10 in a row. So they must be hot at some point in the year.

Yea, Juice, but June usually renders the 10 game winning streak pointless because they are so far out of it at the time...

I love the Pirates. I just don't think they can compete with the way this ownership and administration has them running. Its obvious that Pittsburgh has one of the best farm systems in the bigs, but if we keep developing talent and selling it off after a couple of years we may as well be a AAA team. Also you can't win without spending money to make money. Ask George Steinbrenner, he'll tell you. He's not losing any money on the Yankees. So if we could find a happy medium in Pittsburgh of meshing the homegrown talent along with spending for good outside players (ie, free agency) we could compete again.

A couple of months ago there was an editorial in the Pittsburgh Post Gazette about how the author was tired of Pittsburgh using the "small market" excuse. This dealt with towns like Pittsburgh, Kansas City, and Tampa Bay saying that they couldn't compete in MLB because they were "small markets", I guess compared to cities like NYC and LA. To this arguement he made the point that each of these cities is considered a major market in football. It all has to do with how much ownership is willing to spend.

I guess it is true - you do get what you pay for

I have come to the conclusion the Pirates are allot like golf.

In a round of golf you make just enough good shots to keep you thinking your doing well when in reality it is only a matter of time until you make a really ugly shot and put the dreaded snowman(eight) on the scorecard for a hole. Then you play the last hole well to keep you coming back for another round and more punishment.

The Pirates are sort of the same way. They go on a west coast trip and play well. This gets the fans thinking they are starting to show signs of being a good team. Hey 'we have a chance to reach .500' we say. Then they come home and put the dreaded snowman on the scorecard by losing two games to the Cubs. They turn around and play that last hole well by beating the Rockies 2 out of 3, and the fans say ok were back on track. Bring on the Cards for the next round, and just like golf the punishment starts again.

Well, they just took 2 games from the Orioles and are 28-30. They might be able to pull off a winning season this year. Let's wait and see...

Buccos reach .500. The Pirates haven't been .500 this late in the season in this Century (1999).

The Pirates have been at the bottom of the pack for soooo long it is hard not to get overly excited. A reality check may set in over the next three weeks as they play 16 of 19 on the road against some 'monster' competition, but then again maybe not. If they can hold their own and win between 8-10 games in this span, you have to start thinking about this team finishing above .500.

Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved.
