Lloyd McClendon

Post by defender007 »

All of Pirate land is wondering what Lloyd McClendon's destiny will be?? He is heading into his 5th straight losing season. Do you think he should be fired at midseason, replaced at the end of the season, or maybe given a contract extension and resigned?

That is a tough call.

My head tells me the guy hasn't had enough talent to win over that five year period and that he can't be expected to win without talent.

My heart tells me he should be gone because he has had five season to turn things around. They say the manager doesn't make much difference, but look at the Atlanta Braves this season. They have 10 rookies on their 25 man roster and they are playing over .500 ball and are in playoff contention, and everyone is crediting Bobby Cox for this success.

Don't know if he should be allowed to finish out the season, but he definately shouldn't be given an extension. Because of the losing streak and his affiliation with the Pirates through almost half of that losing streak, I associate McClendon with the losing. This is probably why I think the Pirates need to make change soon.

A lot of Llyod's decisions out there are iffy, but I do love how he goes at with an umpire.

Unfortunatly, that's about one of the only things he does well. The Pirates may not have much talent, but they do have enough to be doing better then they are. It's not like you need a team of all-stars to be good (New England Patriots). So I say give Llyod until the end of the year and if he doesn't get to .500, I'd have to say let him go.

I'm kind of torn on this one too. I do like the fire he brings to the club and the guys seem to like him. But that said, i question so many of the changes he makes every single day. He won't let things alone, sits hot hitters, and makes idiotic changes. I dont know either that he should be fired now, but definately not given an extension. He hasnt had the talent to be a contender, but better than 9 games under .500. I was looking at some 1992 stats the other day. Only two starters hit over .300. Only 1 had over 100 rbi's. only one had over 20 homers. But they played ball every day. They bunted people over, they stole bases, they played their hearts out for Leyland. McClelland was part of that team himself. Got to be time for a change.

I think that he is a half decent coach. He does make some pretty stupid changes, but overall i say he is a good coach. I say what he bucos do is when his contracts is over look for a better coach if there isnt any keep him.

i guess im gonna be the only one to stick up for my boy lloyd on here.

lloyd has earned the respect of his players. HIS players. other team's players know that the pirates have been a bad team since he has been here, but they don't go on to think about the talent lloyd has had to deal with. look at the line up's over the years. the rotations have always been up and down. the bullpen has had scattered result from the very good to the very bad. to blame lloyd for making a bad line up when he is putting the best players up on the field is ridiculous. the one problem i have with lloyd is that he is too loyal to veteran players.

for blame, you need to look higher up in the organization. dave littlefield has made some great moves during his tenure aquiring bay, perez, and kip. he has also had some serious blunders involving the rule 5 draft. littlefield is not my choice for blame tho.

i point directly to the ownership. they are the ones who will not put more than 30 million dollars into the line up. they are the ones that forced payroll cuts which resulted in the loss of aramis rameriz and even reggie sanders who is having another good year with the cardinals.

with the all star game coming to town next year, the pirates plan to boost payroll towards the 50 million dollar level. lloyd should be given the opportunity to coach a team with adequate talent to make a playoff run. the players signed with the extra money and the perfromance of minor league prospects will determine the future of DL. the current ownership needs to step aside if they do not desire to make a committment to winning with this ball club.

Austin,

I think you will get a concensus on your comment about ownership being the problem. The Pirates' ownership continues to get more money from revenue sharing and TV contracts and they continue to cut payroll. The Pirates' ownership is a perfect example of why the teams, like the Yankees, who have to contribute to the revenue sharing pool complain.

The Pirate ownership takes the additional revenue and puts it in their pocket and the big money teams say 'why should we be giving these people money if they aren't using it to improve the overall baseball product?" As much as I despise the financial inequities in baseball, I can't say I disagree with their argument.

Back to McClendon. If ownership is looking to increase payroll to put a winning team on the field, is Lloyd capable of overseeing a winning team? Allot of people are critical of Lloyd for some of the lineups he runs on the field everynight and they base their opinion of him on this factor. I would rather see him evaluated based on the decisions he makes during a game, and at times, he makes some curious game decisions. Whether those decisions are being dictated solely by his decision making or his lack of confidence in his players skills is hard to tell. This make it difficult to evaluate his managerial skills.

My big concern is if ownership does make a committment to the quality of the on field product and Lloyd (who is still somewhat of a quesiton mark) isn't the man to handle the team, then we have likely added another year to the ridiculous losing streak. I realize a new manager does not guarantee success, but adding a guy with a proven winning resume cuts down on the margin of error.

Again my opinion on this matter is that the Pirates have become a 'loser' organization and McClendon is the Chief leading this team to the slaughter every season. He may very well be a good manager if given talent, but at this point, I think the Pirates need some new blood at the top. If for no other reason, than to bring some new optimism to the team.

Yeah, i agree about the ownership/upper management. I remarked in another post about the good article in the altoona mirror (thursday i think it was in). It broke down how the financial status of the game has changed drastically. I agree that the Pirates shouldn't just be putting the revenue sharing money into their pocket, but that is all watched closely by MLB and there are certain ways the money must be used and as of now, the Pirates are doing what is allowed. When you're in the hole as they say they are, they are just trying to continue to field a team without putting the organization under. But when it all comes down to it, i just dont think that Lloyd makes the right decisions at the right times and just isnt the man for the job of taking this club forward.
