NOW- can I say that Pee Wee Herman was robbed- they disqualified him because his handlebar grip streamers were too long. I guess somebody will find this offensive instead of funny......AGAIN!

i'll let it go this time... but seriously this is amazing and i congratulate him...it'll be broken in about...10-15 years tho... and we'll have a new cycling icon.

Re: Lance Armstrong wins Tour for the seventh time
Really, I am happy for him also. Anytime an American athlete dominates the "best of the world" I am glad. Don't misunderstand me. Maybe you can relate to this similarity. I am a NHRA drag racing fanatic, probably more than you are a 'cycle fan. I have been in a hot rod state of mind since the musclecar 60's. My favorite is the Funny Car "THIRTEEN" time champion, John Force. His amazing streak started in 1990. Only twice in the last 15 years has anyone amassed enough points to beat him out. He also is on the verge of retirement as a driver, with 2 young guns as teammates and he's grooming his 21 year old DAUGHTER as his replacement. She has 2 half-sisters also getting their feet wet in drag racing. BTW- I think NASCAR sucks. I also think Lance was the greatest thing in biking since Greg LeMonde. As you say, someone else will come along in a few years. It's inevitable. Please excuse an occasional wisecrack like PeeWee. Just a small attempt at humor.

Re: Lance Armstrong wins Tour for the seventh time
I really don't see another cycyling icon on the horizon anytime soon. Nobody really paid that much attention to Lance until he won several Tours. His popularity has snowballed since then. Another American could come along and win 3 straight Tours and he won't garner much attention, despite the fact it's a tremendous accomplishment to win just one. It's not a sport that is in the mainstream of American sports and will only be treated with respect when someone larger than life comes along and draws attention to it.

That's why I mentioned Greg LeMonde. He really pioneered cycling for the American public awareness. BTW- Auto racers of all types also overcome diseases and handicaps, and have charitable events to raise awareness for different causes. I think that at speeds of 336 mph in less than 5 seconds there is um, somewhat greater risk than other types of racing. "I love the smell of NITRO in the morning!"

There is somewhat greater risk involved in that, just as there is in bungee jumping, but are they sports in the pure sense of the word, as being solely reliant on the strength, skill, and guts of the athlete and his body? How hard could it be to drive in a straight line at high speed for a few seconds, as opposed to cycling up and down the mountains of France?
