Melee mars playoff game at Hempfield
Saturday, March 08, 2008
By Mike White, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The Jeannette High School boys' basketball team could face disciplinary action from the WPIAL because of a fight between the Jayhawks and North Catholic after today's PIAA playoff game at Hempfield.

Jeannette won the Class AA quarterfinal, 86-60, and the fight occurred outside the North Catholic locker room.

The WPIAL will hold a hearing Tuesday with all parties involved, and WPIAL executive director Tim O'Malley acknowledged some of Jeannette's players could face disclipinary action that might affect their status for Wednesday's semifinal game.

Jeannette star Terrelle Pryor was one of many players involved in the incident.

"Clearly what has been reported to have taken place is totally unacceptable and outside what is involved in sportsmanship," said O'Malley. "Might there be consequences? Absolutely. What they might be, I don't know. That will be up to our board of control."

State police said last night the incident is under investigation, though it is being treated so far as a disturbance. No criminal charges have been filed.

According to those who saw the incident, Jeannette's team came down a hallway after the game and approached North Catholic as it entered the locker room.

My quick thoughts on Jeannette, from being at the scorer's table Wednesday night...

Their coach: Arrogant, Pat Riley wannabe. Dressed in all black, hair slicked back. That said, his team was very well-coached and prepared. They shared the ball and were very patient on offense.

T. Pryor: Arrogant jerk. In the first half, he yelled to someone in the crowd "shut the f*** up, b****!"They were probably heckling him, but he better get used to it... I've read how people defend him as being shy, and the nicest kid in the world - those aren't the impressions I got. That said, he played well. Missed a few close shots, but really passed well and played within the team concept. Wasn't as lightning quick off the dribble as I was expecting - he didn't exactly fry people out there, but he is good otherwise.

Anyway, those are my impressions/opinions from a game last week. Sorry if they offend anyone...

It's aweful quiet about that fight that went on  I hope they let each team be as they were  I'd hate to see Jeannette not get a chance to go for the GOLD... I know that both teams are in the wrong, but kids-will-be-kids & what is it really going to teach them ? I think that both teams are already feeling the heat...

Remember when Stox Rox & Trinity went at it a few years ago, down at Hershey Park ? & that was in front of the whole State on T.V. & radio.. What was really done after words, besides what they di,d by throwing out the wrong kids in the game?

What was done to Alliquippa last year when they showed "NO" Sportsmanship after their giveaway loss to the Prep Charter team ? You have to give kids space at times like this... They are under lots of preasure & it's hard for an adult to justify any of this but Hey! you too where a kid at one time too...

All I could find on today's hearing is this:

W.P.I.A.L. hearing on fight today
Jeannette could lose players for semifinal
Tuesday, March 11, 2008
By Mike White, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Although a fight between the North Catholic and Jeannette boys' basketball teams occurred after a PIAA playoff game, the WPIAL will hold a hearing to decide if any disciplinary action will be taken against the players or coaches.

The fight came after a PIAA quarterfinal game Saturday at Hempfield, and the WPIAL Board of Control will conduct a hearing into the case this afternoon in Moon. The Board of Control has 19 members and at least 12 will be present for the hearing.

The WPIAL is hearing the case because two league teams were involved. WPIAL executive director Tim O'Malley said there is a chance penalties could be levied against both teams, and the playing status of some Jeannette players could be affected for a PIAA semifinal game tomorrow against North East.

"When there are two district teams involved, the case stays in that district," O'Malley said. "If it would've been an inter-district game, it would go right to the PIAA."

If the WPIAL makes a ruling that either school doesn't like, the school can appeal to the PIAA. O'Malley said PIAA executive director Brad Cashman is putting together an appeal board that would hear the case tomorrow, if needed.

"[Not knowing] what's going to come out of this hearing, we don't know whether there is a need for [the PIAA appeal panel]," O'Malley said.

The WPIAL asked Jeannette and North Catholic to investigate the incident and report its findings to the league office by yesterday afternoon. Both schools also could take disciplinary action on their own.

State police investigated the incident Saturday and said yesterday no criminal charges have been filed because no one is pressing charges.

WPIAL Decision Could Affect High School Basketball Playoffs......

POSTED: 6:06 pm EDT March 11, 2008
UPDATED: 7:29 pm EDT March 11, 2008

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- The WPIAL held a closed hearing on Tuesday in Moon Township to determine the fate of two local high school basketball teams.

A post- game brawl broke out after Jeannette beat North Catholic in the state quarterfinals at Hempfield Area High School on Saturday.

Players and coaches from both teams attended the hearing. Absent though was Jeannette star, Terrelle Pryor, whose parents did not want him to attend.

According to Tim O'Malley, executive director of the WPIAL, each school was asked to provide a written report of what occurred after Saturday's game. Included in that report would be any disciplinary action already taken against players involved in the fight.

The board is reviewing the reports to determine if the disciplinary action was appropriate. If not, it will impose further disciplinary action.

The board is expected to have a response by Tuesday evening or Wednesday morning at the latest.

At this point, Jeannette is set to play in the state semi-finals on Wednesday.

W.P.I.A.L. Penalizes both schools from Saturday's fight...
Tuesday, March 11, 2008
By Mike White, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The W.P.I.A.L. placed penalties tonight on the Jeannette and North Catholic high school basketball teams and school officials for a fight after Saturday's P.I.A.A. playoff game. But no players are suspended, which means Jeannette will be at full -strength for tomorrow night's P.I.A.A. Class (AA) semifinal game...

The fight occurred Saturday after Jeannette defeated North Catholic in a P.I.A.A. quarterfinal game. The W.P.I.A.L. Board of Control had a hearing today with both teams and school officials. The board placed the following penalties on both schools:

• The coaches and players from both teams must attend anger-management classes by the end of the school year, and the coach of each team must attend a coaching education class....

• All athletic programs at both schools were placed on two years' probation. During that time, if any sports team is involved in a similar incident, the team will forfeit its rights to qualify for the playoffs.. .

• The coaches, principals and athletic administrators at both schools were publicly censured.

• Jeannette and North Catholic must give the W.P.I.A.L. a written plan on how athletic contests will be managed in order to ensure a similar incident won't happen again. Jeannette must submit its plan by today.. .

W.P.I.A.L. executive director Tim O'Malley said, testimony during the hearing did not show exactly which players were involved in the fight that occurred near the athletic locker room. Jeannette beat North Catholic, 86-60. O'Malley said, testimony clearly showed some words exchanged on the court during the game played a part in the fight...

"The board felt the penalties assigned should be equal," O'Malley said. "The board did not feel what was presented [at the hearing] was severe enough or one-sided enough to take one of these teams out of the playoffs..."

"Kids will be kids" ???????

This is a joke!

All it is showing is that if you are a star then you can do anything you want!

IF TP was a real leader he would have held his team back instead of being in on it. Who cares if it costs a team a gold medal... all it taught them is that they can get away with whatever they want.

According to Chop's most recent post, there are ZERO repercussions to the players' actions?? Now thats something you want to teach kids in high school!

Dfense wins games,

Unfortualtely, that is about the way things are handled in today's society.. The kids have the upper hand on what ever they choose.. Is it right ? Hell "NO"... But this is the path that today's adults take...This is what we teach them they are aloud to do...

As I stated in a post prior, Nothing gets done about Nothing  That's why the Catholic schools can recruite, that's why the kids can get in a fight, that's why kids can swap teams, that's why kids don't have to listen, & that's why we have, what we have !!!!

Do you really think Terrell Pryor is going to worry about a two-year suspension on his Jay-Hawks team ? He's outa here in another game or two & if a fight breaks out & he's involved.. So What !!! No skin off his Buttisimo...

Yes! Sometimes you learn more from loosing, than winning, but anymore that's not the case...
