What Paterno SHOULD have said was, "I lied. I lied to my family. I lied to our coaching staff. I lied to the Grand Jury about my knowledge of 1998, and I talked Tim Curley out of reporting Jer to the authorities in 2001. I also stalled in reporting what Big Red told me, and didn't want to disrupt anyone's weekend. I just wanted it all to go away. I was wrong and my decision ruined many lives. I had immense power at the university and throughout the country. I knew that something definitely was awry with Jer. I acknowledge that I should have used my immense power and influence to stop Jer, but chose instead to protect the program and my fortune. I was wrong, vey wrong...morally and ethically wrong on every level. I deserve whatever consequence I get because, like I have taught my players, success with honor is important. However, it is equally as important to admit mistakes and face the consequences that those mistakes bring. God help me as I set an example for my players by facing the consequences of my actions and lack thereof and practice what I have preached for all these years."
If he had said that, he at least would have had a shred of dignity.
Paterno was a huge part of he problem in this whole thing. He was the tail wagging the dog, and he did it for decades. Penn State reaped what they have sowed by allowing Paterno to become bigger than Penn State. He donated several million dollars to the university, but his gross negligence (along with the gross negligence of those who put Paterno in charge instead of leading and doing the right thing-Curley, Shultz, and Spanier) will cost the university hundered of millions over time.
Really, what good did Paterno do for Penn State? It was all a sham which was and still is being bought by the cult followers. Joe was a self-serving, egotistical glory hound, meglomaniac.
