You can't coach size, and speed kills. Those two things are what coaches look for, regardless of where you play or live. The x-factor is size and speed together = D1. As either of these 2 attributes diminish, so does ones chance of being recruited D1, but not impossible.

Playing D1 isn't out of reach for D5 and D6 players by a long shot though. Currently Montminy plays at PSU, and a few years ago, Haas played at Stanford, and the Smith kid back in 05 or 06 went on to play at Army. Those are just PV kids in the last 5 - 7 years. All of these kids made it to D1 and played, and the most important part of their all these kids resume was grades; they all were top shelf students, i.e. 4.0.

All those PV kids were not offered D1 scholarships immediately and walked on, except for the Army kid who obviously got a full ride along with a 4 year commitment beyond college, correct?

Not to knock Montiminy, but a kid like that being on the team is a statement about the current affairs of PSU men's basketball. The Nick Collella kid from New Castle played at PSU-Behrend for a year, a D3 school where he averaged 7ppg, then came to PSU main, and now plays 20 minutes a game. Wow.

WPIAL - seriously, "not to knock Montminy", but you did. Facts are, he is playing and he is on scholarship. And his grades were good enough he could have gone to many other schools not just on a hoops scholly, but academic as well. I name three kids on one team that did/are playing D1 hoops, and you type it out like they didn't. Come on man! Out!

No what I really knocked was the state of PSU men's basketball. There's no doubt Montiminy or Colella are good players and it sounds like at least Montiminy is a solid student as well. In the long run, being a solid student is what really matters.

My point is that they are walk ons who earned a scholarship the hard way and are playing minutes (Colella started some games) at a high major D1 men's hoops program, which in reality is a program with a PSAC quality roster masquerading as a high major D1 program. Good for Montiminy and Colella.

However, if PSU men's hoops program wasn't in shambles, these two would never have the opportunity. How many other D1 offers did either player have? I know the answer, zero... because they walked on at PSU. Again, not a knock on the players but on the state of PSU men's basketball. I am sure both kids would've done just fine at places like Carnegie Mellon or Franklin and Marshall or Dickinson and quite frankly would be getting a better education.

My point is, PSU is playing Big 10 basketball with a few players who are playing significant roles who are D3, maybe D2 level athletes. That explains 2 wins in theB10 this season. It says a lot about the state of PSU men's hoops.

You earn them based off of size or athleticism? Hey I watched FGCU's point guard, who is no more than 5-11 175 drop probably 14 assists on San Diego State last night. I'm sure he played AAU, and I'm sure he didn't play in a conference like the WestPac. I'm not captain AAU at all, but it is the state we are in. I don't embrace it, I just accept it.

really... you just cant ever hold back on the westpac... amazing how you want to put them down year after year. who represented d5 this year in the state playoffs both football and basketball, was it bedford county teams or westpac teams? think it was maybe berlin shade and c.t. but you always seem to use westpac as your pos reference.

WPIAL* - can't type enough words to train or beg the ignorant. Renninger from CM heading to Lehigh on a D1 academic and athletic scholarship. But according to WPIAL* that wouldn't count either, cause its only Lehigh and part of his offer is based on academics. Its amazing you think walking on at PSU is an automatic and ho hum.
