Just saw on Twitter 6 classes did pass. Will be implemented next year.

@mwhiteburgh: Wow. PIAA just voted 23-7 for 6 classes in basketball, baseball, softball, 4 in girls volleyball, soccer. 3 in field hockey, two lacrosse.

Now if only D6 would come up with a plan to play by classification.
Or at least 1 class below and 1 class above.

Clariton and BG would still be in the smallest classification, interesting
who will benefit from this ?
What schools are going to go from big fish to small fish and vice versa
will schools be allowed to play up a class, so they can avoid the private schools?

Schools have always had the option of moving up in classification. Example is Bellwood moving up to AAA in Girls Softball for the current cycle. School enrollments are due by 10/15, PIAA will divide into "sixths" send out the preliminary classifications plan and give schools a month to elect to move up if they desire. This all should happen and be final for the next two year cycle in all sports prior to Christmas this year.

Honestly, schools like Johnstown and Somerset have nothing to gain playing in the LHAC against mostly A schools. They scrap all year and can't amass the points like the other schools can. That subregion should just be playing itself like a league. I know that's easier said than done with seven teams and open dates, etc.

Does anyone know how the D9 teams will fare in this six class set up? Will Clearfield, Bradford, Punxsy all be in AAAA now?

According to current enrollment numbers, I believe the D9 teams would be AAAA along with Somerset and Jtown. U Prep would be AAA.

Wonder if Portage would make the jump to AA to get away from BG

No one knows what class any school will be in, at this point it is just speculation.

They are going to have 6 Equal Classes according to the Trib Review.

That means if there were 600 football playing schools the 100 schools with the largest enrollment would be 6A, the next 100 would be 5A, etc.....

Teams will learn their new classifications in mid-November, Lombardi said.

They'll then have until Dec. 15 to decide whether to “play up” in class. The final class breakdown for all sports will be presented Dec. 17 at the PIAA board meeting, he said.
