I never thought they were actual PIAA teams, they play a lot of Christian schools ect.

Yeah I remember seeing Belleville in the playoffs before. Might have even been last year. I'm not sure about Grace.

The Boys Basketball Postseason breakdown is as follows:

AAAAAA - There are 3 District Six teams, plus 2 District 8 teams (Pittsburgh City League) and Erie McDowell to form a six team region.   4 of those six teams will play in a regional playoff with the top 2 advancing to the state playoffs. 

6 teams - 4 playoff teams -  2 state playoff bids. 

AAAAA - There are 3 District 6 teams, plus Dubois of District 9. All 4 teams make the district playoffs, and one team advances to the state playoffs. 

4 teams - 4 playoff teams - 1 state playoff bid. 

AAAA - Districts 5 and 6 are combined.  Johnstown, Forest Hills, Tyrone, Central, Huntingdon, Bald Eagle and Somerset and Bedford.  6 teams makes the playoffs, 2 advance to states. 

8 teams - 6 playoff teams - 2 state playoff bids. 

AAA - There are 14 teams from District Six plus two teams from District 5 (Everett and Chestnut Ridge).  12 teams makes the playoffs, 4 advance to the state playoffs. 

16 teams - 12 playoff teams - 4 state playoff bids

AA - There are 14 teams, 12 teams advance to the playoffs. 4 go to states.

14 teams - 12 playoff teams - 4 state playoff bids.

A - There are 10 teams, 8 of them make the playoffs, 3 go to states.

10 teams - 8 playoff teams - 3 state playoff bids.

So the "open" tournament is gone, but more teams will be forced into the playoffs this year than before. There's no way Class A and AA needs to take all but 2 teams to the postseason. Had the old rules been in place, less teams would have entered anyway.


District Six needs to find more venues to accommodate the extra games.. Cramming all the games into Central Cambria, Bishop Carroll, Richland, and Hollidaysburg isn't going to work. They need a few more venues.

What's the story with Grace Prep and Belleville?  Do they actually field teams?  

Yes, they both field PIAA basketball teams for both boys and girls.  Grace Prep mostly plays teams from the Allegheny Christian Athletic Association.  Belleville plays is in a basketball-only conference with Saint Joseph's, Harrisburg Academy, Carson Long (boys only) and Linden Hall (girls only).  They fill the schedule with a mix of ACAA teams and others close to them.

I've seen both play first hand.  My guess is that Belleville will not win a game this season.  Grace Prep will make the playoffs due to the nature of their schedule, but will not threaten anyone.  Saint Joseph's recently doubled them up 62-31 with the JV in before half.

The first round of the playoffs, the higher seeed gets the home game.  Neutral site games begin in second round.

Outside of Hbg, CC, BC, and Richland, I am thinking of some other possible D6 playoff venues...

Mount Aloysius College
Altoona Area HS Fieldhouse
Tyrone Area HS
State College Area HS
Bald Eagle Area HS

Those are venues that could accommodate fans that immediately come to mind.

Johnstown is large enough, not sure what happened with them using that venue.  It's been a while. 

Not sure if the brand new Forest Hills school will have a big enough gym or not. 

I also noticed Central Cambria is using chairs for the team benches instead of the first row of the bleachers. It appears they don't pull down that side of bleachers.  That shrinks the capacity without those bleachers.
