Francisco Liriano will be a better pitcher in 2017 than Ivan Nova at a lower price.

The best free agent pitcher on the market in the Pirates price range may be the same one who was available last year.  Yep.  53 year old Bartolo Colon.

Chris Sale's 2017 contract is $12 million. He has club options in 2018 and 2019 at $12.5 million and $13.5 million. Three years $38 million.

That's pretty reasonable for a Cy Young caliber pitcher. So it's just the cost of talent not the cost of salary that would concern the Pirates.

In what would be the first time ever, I wish the pirates would spend whatever money they plan on using in free agency on one legit player.  Instead of wasting 20-25 million dollars on 4 or 5 scrubs how about putting it into one elite player.  This year is seems like that would go to a starting pitcher.

Starting Pitching market is weak this year.  I think Ivan Nova is actually one of the better names out there.

The Pirates will reach out to former Buccos to plug the upcoming gaps. They will reach out to Marvell Wynne to take over for McCutchen. They Will look to get back Jose DeLeon. The bench since Joyce , Rodriquez will leave. Amis Otis, Sito Lezcano,  George Hendrick and Steve Kemp. They will ask Teke to step away from ROOT and take over for Melancon.

That's better than spending money on Jeff Locke, John Niese, and Ryan Voglesong, no?
