BTW, IMO... Jackson was the best general this country ever produced. If he isn't killed at Chancellorsville in May of 1863 I am convinced that the South would have won the Civil War.

The North would have won, and would always win, if it was replayed. Glorify the South all you want. Wars are fought with money, and if you were actually as big of a historian as you claim, you'd know that Confederate sympathy in the south (the citizens) was WANING HEAVILY because they kept taxing the people to pay for supplies. Nevermind the fact that the only port the South had left was an undeveloped port down here in Galveston. They did not have, and would never have had, the resources or manpower to beat the North. No foreign countries would recognize the South because of political implications. They were doomed from the start.

Not saying Jackson wasn't a great general, but let's be realistic here.

You make some good arguments TAE but you don't have to demean me while making them. I'll avoid doing that to you. Your right about one point that FH would have beat the Quips with Baumgardner. lol

Now to the heart of the matter. To explain my alternate theory: Jackson was shot at the the apex of his military genius. The ANV ended up winning the Battle of Chanellorsville without him but imagne if he didn't get wounded how much more coordinated and concentrated his renewed attack would have been the next day. Even if he doesn't pin the Army of the Potomac against the river and annihilate them they would have suffered many more losses than they did in the actual battle. Remember that Jeb Stuart led the assault the next day performed fine for a calvary officer not anywhere near Jackson's capability.

If the Army of the Potomac escaped Jackson's flank attack they would have been in much worse shape to fight the battle of Gettysburg. Imagne Jackson their the first day falling on the union right! There would have been no hesitation or piecemeal attacks. Heck the battle probably wouldn't have been in Gettyburg but further north to the east of Harrisburg! I could go on and maybe I will tomorrow but I'm tired after a long day of being a husband, father, teacher, coach, and a farmer and less and less of a history buff recently!

One more thing though...TAE remember if the South had won a decisive victory (destruction of the Army of the Potomac in PA and capturing Harrisburg) the focus of the whole war would have changed. England still would have hesitated but I believe that Napolean III would have thrown his hat in the ring and recognized the confederacy as a sovereign nation and the Hapsburgs might have as well. You might think this is crazy but Napolean III was crazy and during our civil war he was attempting to conquer Mexico and could have very easily used a decisive victory by the confederates as an excuse to expand the war. Imagne the French fleet breaking up the Union blockade!

All speculation and alternate history is fun to imagne and contemplate. You might not like him but Newt Gingrich has written two good books on this very subject. Gettysburg and Grant Comes East. Check them out they are good reads and provide a very plausible scenario.

Vietnam War protester Jane Fonda voiced her opinion about the U.S.-led war with Iraq Thursday, saying the campaign will turn people all over the world against America.

Jane FondaAccording to The Associated Press, Fonda told a Canadian audience that the conflict frightens her, but is not sure what Americans can do about it.

"I don't know if a country where the people are so ignorant of reality and of history, if you can call that a free world," Fonda said.

The 65-year-old actress and peace activist has been the target of criticism for decades for her opposition to the Vietnam War. She raised the ire of the United States when she posed for pictures overseas with members of the opposition's military.

Fonda made her comments during the Unique Lives and Experiences lecture series in Vancouver. In addition to the war, Fonda also talked about Canada, her acting career and three marriages and divorces.

Fonda last marriage was to media mogul Ted Turner, which ended in divorce in 2001 after 10 years.

The daughter of legendary actor Henry Fonda, Jane Fonda won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for 1971's "Klute" and a Best Actress Oscar for 1978's "Coming Home." Her other films include "Julia," "The China Syndrome" and "On Golden Pond," where she co-starred with her father.

Hmm, just two years ago. Wonder why all of the sudden she changed her tune and apologized. Have anything to do with promoting a new book and movie?
