Temporarily maybe, but I doubt it. The Phils would have to eat a pile of that $ for Huntington to even consider it, at his age, and recent injury history, he could only be considered a bandaid for short-term. Erik Aybar is another possibility who is under control for 3 more years for similar money to what Barmes is getting, with the exception that he has upside, speed, and more than one year in Colorado to support it.

It would be nice to get a shortstop, but I imagine adding a Right Fielder or starter might take priority, simply with more options out there.

The Bucs have a lot of good bullpen arms right now, in the majors and at AAA. Boston needs bullpen help and has an abundance of infielders on the left side. How about we ship Melancon back to Boston for Xander Bogaerts? Bogaerts has been a very highly rated prospect and can we really expect Melancon not to regress? Wilson could step into the 8th inning role and Black or Welker are two more flame throwers who could do well in the 6th or 7th. It'll probably never happen, but I'm just kind of thinking out loud.

Speaking of trading with Boston . How happy would we be right now if Huntington didn't shy away from the deal for Iglesias ? Reasoning that he wasn't projected to be able to hit in the show. ( he's hitting.390 in Boston now)

The Grilli situation can be a big problem for the Bucs. Yes, they have Melancon and Wilson on the back end now. Gomez, Morris, Watson, and Mazzaro have been dependent as well.


Still, if Grilli's spot becomes available for any extended period of time......Here are the internal options.

1. Jared Hughes 4.96 ERA in 16.1 MLB innings this season. 0.56 ERA in 18 minor league innings.
2. Duke Welker 3.47 ERA in AAA Indy in 46.2 Innings with 48 K's on the year. 0.00 ERA with Bucs in 1.1 Innings
3. Ryan Reid 0.83 ERA in 43.1 Innings in AAA. 1.64 ERA in 11 major league innings
4. Vic Black 2.31 ERA in 35 Innings as Indy's closer. 15 Saves 51 K's .161 Average against



So can the Pirates maintain a high level Bullpen without Grilli, probably. All of those options are fairly young guys too, with Black being mentioned as a Pirates closer down the line.
