Re: Ken Lantzy
You're missing the point. The NHL changed their format this past year, it wouldn't make sense to call teams "Eastern Conference" and "Western Conference" if you have players from the same team playing on different sides would it? If you're putting all the high schools in a hat and drawing them, you're going to have schools from all over the map on each team. It has nothing to do with political/social correctness! Personally, I think Blue-White or Blue-Gray, as suggested in this thread would be just fine. Chill out, it's not like there was a rebel flag on the South teams' jerseys all these years.Manfred wrote:Gee. Why don't we call the 2 teams the Democrats and the Republicans? Or the yings and the yangs. Whats wrong with N-S ? It is geographical, not meant to be socially correct. Or does every kid participating now get a trophy, and instead of shaking hands they hold hands in a circle and instead of the Star Spangled Banner they sing Kum-Bay-Ya?

Re: Ken Lantzy
The way the borders were drawn up, it was never a true North-South game anyway, it was silly to call the teams as such.
Re: Ken Lantzy
How about us vs. them? I would discuss the game but for the 27th time in the past 27 years I missed it.

No, you missed the point, doug. I frequently use the absurd to illustrate the absurd. It's also called sarcasm to some. My POINT was why change it from what it was? Just for the record, I have no problem at all with keeping history correct, and thus approve of terms and symbols of rebels, redskins, etc.dougkeklak wrote:You're missing the point. Re: Ken Lantzy
Rebels I can see as historical....but redskins, no sir. That's just plain racism.
Re: Ken Lantzy
Easy Hillary, this is the problem with America right now. Everyone is offended by everything. Everything must be politically correct. If we would just start caring less about meaningless words and images, we could all move on. Rebels are historical. This also makes the rebel flag historical as well, but we can't show this because it's a symbol of the slavery and oppression from 175 years ago. Every team should be an animal, but we have to watch out there too. Philadelphia should not be allowed to be the Eagles, not if the Ben Franklin supporters can't have the Trenton Turkeys.

We want to be fair to all. Every label has to have meaning behind it. Yes, Redskins is incorrect, but it was the term used back in the day. How else can name the Native Americans as a mascot that wouldn't be politically incorrect? Leaves us with Warriors...which is a broad statement. What about the Irish? They were oppressed, however, we can go to Notre Dame and eat Lucky Charms without causing chaos.

We need to let words go and just let them be words. Sticks and stones may break my bones but words....can be convoluted by the media and send the country into another civil war. How bout next time you have to put your race on a medical sheet, you select other and put American...

Re: Ken Lantzy
So if a team decided to call themselves the N-Word you'd be ok with this? Hey, it's what they were called "back in the day"
Re: Ken Lantzy
My point was to eliminate the negativity associated with these words. Either everyone can say them or nobody at all. And if you can't have one, you shouldn't have all the others. If we let these words offend us, then we're dividing the country into us and them instead of "One Nation, Under God" (which is another story for another day). The reason these words are still being used is because the other side is still offended by them. If the words didn't carry any lasting effect, they would die off. For heavens sake, we let a finger represent evil because it happens to be stuck in the middle and someone was upset by that. If nobody disliked the middle finger then nobody would put it up....make sense?
