For those ranting and raving about health risks, keep in mind that alcohol and tobacco are two completely legal drugs readily used by a huge percentage of the GENERAL population. Those two drugs have killed/screwed up hundreds of thousands times more lives than steroid abuse, as steroids only really affect a smaller percentage of athletes, because most of them are too "ethical" or do not believe in using them anyway.

As for detection and the athlete staying "a step ahead", keep in mind that the IOC had NO IDEA about THG, and records were falling and the likes of Marion Jones were turning into super humans and the IOC was clueless. An anonymous tipper gave them a syringe with the substance in it, which led to the whole BALCO investigation right now. Point being, as TAE has said, the athlete will always be one step ahead, so use will never stop.

And from baseball's standpoint, how about the dude from San Diego who was on to Ken Caminetti's use but looked aside because he was putting up MVP numbers? And while steroids dont improve your hand eye cooridination, they can help you hit the ball alot farther. What brought baseball back on its feet after the strike in 94? THE HOME RUN. let me get something straight here. are you, debiceps and TAE, advocating the use of steroids by professional athletes? that is the message i am getting from u two, and i just want to be sure that my reading comprehension skills have not diminished in my "old" age.

I'm not so much advocating it as much as I am intelligent enough to know that it's not going away. You're fighting a losing battle and wasting thousands (if not millions) just to save face. Like I said, this is just like the war on drugs. It looks good on paper but is completely ineffective. Just wait until your tax dollars are going to the MLB to test for steroids once guys are still doing them and the random testing isn't working because the variants are undetectable. This is only going to get worse.

i agree that fighting steroids may turn into an unwinnable battle.

i agree that congress getting involved is primarily a vote grubbing ploy.

i do not agree, since modern science can make cheating medically risk-free and undetectable, that the powers that be (leaders of baseball in this case) should not do everything they can to deter cheating (using of steroids in this case).

Same here.. I dont condone their use, because steroids are an illegal drug and therefore their use and possession is a federal offense, but they're here, they've been here, and they will always be here..

Eliminating coke was simple because cocain is cocain, but science will always be two steps ahead of baseball, and thus it's a losing battle to pursue it. Testing for known drugs is just fine, and if people are stupid enough to use those substances and test positive they deserve all of the penalties, along with TAE's Dunce of The Week award..
