I agree Longball.....money is the reason the WPIAL starts a week early, it's not to protect some long-standing tradition with their playoffs (they used to have fewer teams/only section champions entered anyway) it's all about preserving that 16 team bracket and needing an extra week to do it so that they make more Ca$h.

And on the surfact that seems very wrong but I am closer to the situation and can tell you this. If a District committee has a bad year at the gate, they can't raise taxes to make up the difference. They are totally subject to their gate revenues. ANd football doesn't just have to cover football, and wrestling cover wrestling expenses, and basketball cover its expenses....they've got to cover all the other sports that lose a ton of money when they run district tournaments for it. Tennis, Cross Country, Soccer, Golf, are all losing propositions for District committees anywhere. Baseball/Softball and Track & Field are risky.....sometimes coming out okay and other times finishing in the "red".

District 5 made about 16,000 on football last year with only 5 games.....think about what 6 makes with 17 games and looking to increase that next year by 8! Think about the WPIAL with all 4 classifications in 16-team brackets (60 games folks) and they need it as they are larger districts and run larger "net loss type" tournaments in the other sports.

When referring to enrollment numbers please know that Tussey Mountain has approximately 161 males in grades 9-12 while Juniata Valley has approximately 117. So please don't say that Tussey doesn't have the numbers to support a quality football team. Also, why can't district 5 play a 10 game regular season while have only 4 playoff teams. Someone will say "somebody will get hurt so why play another game" but that logic will get you nowhere. When does it end, should you only play 8 games because someone will get hurt during the ninth or play only5 so nobody gets hurt during the last several games. I believe that more than 50% of participating schools should not make the playoffs. I disagree with district 6 playoff system for next year as well. I think this is a continual trend of today's society of wanting everyone to feel good about themselves. And I read that some of the thought is about money and there is nothing to say about that. If people flock to watch Tussey play at NBC in the first round of the playoffs and that makes money for the district, then I guess the district is better off. And please don't try to compare the product of District 5 versus District 6. There is one team in D5 that could compete very well in D6 and that is Windber. From #2 down the line D5 is extremely weak.

Bigman,

I agree with your post. However, you'll never convince the d5 population that any of their teams are weak. I also agree that one team would do very well in d6. Windber would do well and from there down it's junior varsity.

HR, first off, my 40 b-ball games in one week was more hypothetical than anything, but it is possible (ever hear of a double header, i know they happen)

secondly, where did i ever say that i supported the idea of 16 team A football in district 6? if it does become a reality and there are sub. .500 teams in it, then yes ill be on here b***** just as much as i am now about it. i see alot of talking about "what would the playoff teams do if not enough qualified to make a 3 week playoffs" well heres an idea. BYE WEEK! whats so difficult about giving a few teams a week off? NCAA does it, NFL does it, what makes high school so special that they must play every week of the season? besides i would think that teams would welcome a week to rest and strengthen before heading into the playoffs. 2 weeks of preperation is better than 1 isnt it? somebody?

finally, yes of the 16 teams that would qualify under next years d6 rules, only 4 of them are below .500, the best solution to this is have a 12 team playoff, granted theres no way anyone outside of the top 4 would have a chance against carroll, but 11. mo valley could hang in with 2. portage. but like i said, if indeed it does change and there are sub .500 teams in d6 playoffs next year, then watch out because ill be saying the same crap i am now.

Gunner, the first paragraphs was geared toward you and your not-so-good "hypothetical"....the rest of my rant was toward those who turn their noses down toward D5 and feel that "6 does it better" and toward comments made on here that "nowhere in the rest of the state would you see something like is happening in 5-A football, which I proved untrue"

I don't see this as a D5 vs D6 "teams" things.....hey, D6 is much, much stronger than 5 this year.....and in most years because they have 3 times as many teams, it's shear numbers. Our best team, Windber, fits in with 6's best, beyond that we have a bunch of teams that fit in somewhere in the 6-16 range (including Tussey who beat your current #15 team, Claysburg). There have been years when D5 has had as many as 3-teams who fit into D6's top 4-5. The D6 champion, whoever it is, has an excellent chance IMO to run the table in the eastern region of the state bracket. We'll see.

What I do see this as, is a D5 has the wrong idea for their playoff format thing and that's where I have a serious problem. It's set up the way it is, and I don't think it's any different percentage of teams-wise than any other tourney across the state for six teams. It so happens that their is a bunch of 3-win teams (there will be 2 or 3 after this weekend) and that Tussey, due to a AA win, is the winner of the sixth seed. Normally I would think it would take 4-wins to get the sixth seed. Not a lot different than 6-AAA....who would have guessed that when the tourney was set up that only 2 teams would have a winning record.

As for other options.....As for BigMans "play a 10th game" option....well, nice idea but not very practical.....who is going to play who??? D6 is in their playoffs and already has conditional dates set up. For D5 to say across the board...."okay, we're taking 4 teams and you need to get a 10th game to fill that week", who are you gonna play. Sure, TM and NB could play crossovers into Somerset Co. easy enough but who do the other Somerset Co. teams play???? They already played each other. Believe me, this idea was discussed and the "10th date" idea was nixed for that very reason.

BYE week. C'mon Gunner, how often do you see bye weeks at the HS level anywhere....they are very rare. Next year with the additional week you'll see every district in the state increase their playoff size....except District 5 that is!!!! (And WPIAL who will go back to starting the same date as the rest of the state) and then Gunner, the almighty "bye" week you discuss will be used. Not the 10th date though. D5 is opting to start their playoffs the 10th date (same format...6 teams) and take the bye week prior to playing the WPIAL champion so that we don't have teams playing an extra week when winter sports are getting started. Thus only 1 team (D5 champ) will have a bye week instead of 6. Besides, the #1 and #2 seeds would be staring at 2 Bye weeks in a row unless they could secure a 10th date with someone (near impossible w/D6 going to 16 teams in their playoffs)

thats exactly my point, how many games does the average state champ play? 16-17 somethin like that? now how many does the average NCAA team play? less than 16 or 17, even the national champ only plays like 14 or somethin like that. and yet they have bye weeks, dont tell me that extra 12 minutes per game rates a bye week. id bet if you took a survey of all the coaches in the area and asked them how they felt about having a week off before the playoffs many of them would support the idea. sure you'd have the one or two that would argue that itd take momentum out of teams before getting there, but why would you NOT want an extra week to prepare?

I agree that the top 4-5 teams in dist 6 are quality teams and for the most part would have the upper hand against Dist 5. You had Berlin last year and NBC who I think could of competed with the top 4 teams in Dist 6 and WIndber has always been a strong team that could compete with any Dist 6 A team when they had that incredible run for 4 years. Con township two years ago had a nice team and took BG to the final minutes in the playoffs before getting beat. I dont think anyone replying is saying Dist 5 is better because just isnt true. But Dist 5 has 2-3 teams that could compete every year with the top 6 teams in Dist 6 single A. Now, I said compete not beating them. I dont see anyone bragging up Dist 5 I just am seeing folks justifying what Dist 5 is doing comparing that to what some other districts are doing in football playoffs. Dragonfanz I agree a 3-6 team making playoffs is not a good thing. Why all the bitterness towards dist 5 though my man?? If you are from Central the football playoffs are something the dragons will not see for a long long time.
