Ya know, southpaw, not defending Hitler or anything, but a lot of historians tend to see Hitler's in-field military ability as pretty good. I am not a miliraty historian, or claiming to be a historian at all, but even I can see Hitler's win-loss record. His generals were brilliant. Better than any set of generals the world has seen in a very long time, maybe ever. And if you are going to give US presidents credit for things, or credit coaches with championships, you have to give Hitler the credit his generals should have gotten. Therefore, Hitler was pretty dang competent, at least in the early stages.
It's very easy to see the Nazis as madmen with no intelligence, but I can assure you those people were more organized and efficient, however they used those talents being besides the point, moreso than any faction the world has ever seen. You don't just conquer all that territory and kill that many people in that period of time, without atomic weapons, unless you have your act together. Not condoning Nazism, so don't even stick with me it.
And what you said about the gauges is TOTALLY wrong! You better look that one up too whenever you are looking up your claim about Franco. Germany had immense problems moving their resources and troops into Russia. Haven't you heard about the carts and horses trouble they had with the mud, and everything else? C'mon, dawg...

Even before the war when Germany was pumping out military equipment, they never made near as many tanks as Russia did in that last year and a half. The production power simply wasn't there. I realize that Germany's tanks were technically superior, but the USSR's tanks had guns that could pierce the heavy armor of the Germans. They even had an advantage in speed, though that isn't hard to do, since all the German tanks were slow. Also, what do you mean Germany had the manpower that the USSR did? Look at the population difference.

Well, considering that by about 2015 they will have 50 planes in the air compared to our 14...

The transportation problem is more than a "gauge" problem. Russia just did have the rail network or road system that western Europe had. If Hitler was so good then why did he lose? The greatest of commanders end their career by WINNING their last battle! There aren't many Caesars or Alexanders or Washingtons out there! Napolean, Hannibal, and Lee were great generals but they failed ultimately to win their cause.
DCP, The typical German soldier was better equipped and trained than the typical Rooskie soldier. Fighting a two front war just spread the better trained German troops too thin.

Southpaw, I really do like you, but trying to rationalize with you is quite a difficult and retarded adventure.
Why doesn't Michigan or Miami or USC or OU win the national title every year?
Your arguments are just whacky.

You don't have to be mean about it. Just agree to disagree on certain points!
What's wrong with comparing successful generals with ones who had early success but ultimately were defeated?
Washington lost almost every major battle he fought. But he doggedly kept the army together and achieved victory against all odds.
The Bills had a great team in the 90's but choked four times in the big game. Should they be considered among the greatest teams of all time or a dynasty?
Lee was overrated; without Jackson he was a very mediocre commander!

Longstreet was probably just as important to Lee as Jackson, but that's a whole nother topic.
I think what TAE is trying to say is that Hitler was a very good strategist and field commander as far as knowing what to do. The problem towards the end of the war was that he started to lose his head a bit, and thought that everybody was against him. He also worried about image and stuff. Even though he darn well knew better than to start fighting with Russia, he did it because he hated what they stood for, and his heart overruled him mind. By the end of WWII, Hitler was probably as loony as they come. But towards the begginning, he knew the deal.
And TAE, it's starting to seem like USC is winning the national title each year. I think it's Ohio State's turn, or maybe Oklahoma or Texas.

I honestly wasn't trying to be mean about it, I was just shocked that you saw the gauge problem as not really that important. It was an extreme oversight.
Germany ran out of manpower. That is probably the biggest reason for losing the war. You still need boots on the ground to win, that's just the way it has been up to the present point. Remember who was defending Berlin? 13 yr olds and 60 yr old men. The war destroyed an entire generation of German peoples. It does not matter how good your tanks are, or your guns, or whatever. When you aggressively try to conquer that much territory that quickly, you need to garrison troops there to keep the local yokels at bay. The area needs to be policed. I don't understand how you don't see this, especially with our own problem of stationing all our troops in other places!

Police: Man Arrested For Spitting On Jane Fonda
Fonda Declines To Press Charges
POSTED: 9:19 am EDT April 20, 2005
UPDATED: 10:58 am EDT April 20, 2005
KANSAS CITY, Mo. --
Police said they arrested a man for spitting on two-time Academy Award-winning actress Jane Fonda during a book-signing stop in Kansas City Tuesday night.
Fonda, 67, spoke at Unity Temple, in The Plaza shopping district, about her new best-selling book, "My Life So Far," and her new movie with Jennifer Lopez called "Monster-In-Law."
At about 9 p.m., police said, a man who had been waiting in line for about 90 minutes, passed a book to Fonda and then spit a large amount of tobacco juice into her face.

They said the man then ran away and was taken into custody by off-duty officers, who were providing security for the event.
Fonda declined to prosecute the man.
Michael A. Smith, 54, was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct, which is a city charge.
In 1972, Fonda was photographed sitting in a North Vietnamese anti-aircraft tank. About her involvement in the Vietnam War, Fonda has apologized for her anti-aircraft tank photo. She has called it an incredible lapse in judgment.
Just a lapse in judgement now? Go figure.
Wonder how many hippy, slime ball, draft dodgers were arrested for spitting on GI's returning home from Vietnam.
I hope it burned her eyes!
