Westmont Basketball

What has happened to the Hilltoppers? Has the new caoch spent anytime teaching these kids??? I never remember a Roman team playing that bad no matter what type of talent they had. Looks like the kids have very little respect for their coach. Any comments?

Westmont is obviously struggling. I am sure that the new coach is only a small part of it. In all fairness to him, it's his first year...and I am not sure he knew what he was in for...The man deserves a shot at implementing a program. He was hired late (August) and really had no noteworthy head coaching experience at an LHACK-type school. These were challenges that he faced immediately.

I hope that all of those Westmont folks (fans, parents, etc.) who think that they invented basketball ease up and give the man a fair shot. Three seasons is a fair shot to implement what he needs to, IMHO...Unless there are some deep-seated issues that weren't revealed in the interview process, or a new coach makes such ridiculous decisons that hurt kids or are flat out illegal, anyone deserves at least 3 seasons.

21 points against Hollidaysburg? One of the first orders of business: Get them off the schedule.

Don't forget that in the last 3 years against Holidaysburg, Westmont is 2-1. However, I was looking at maxpreps and apparently 2 of holidaysburg's starters are sophmores and one is a junior. Looking at this I'm not quite sure how Westy, a team that has been known to play mostly seniors, will be able to compete with them in the near future.

Roman is overrated. He bailed on Westmont because he knew they were going to be down. As well as Johnstown played down the stretch last year and having everyone back, there is no way they should have 3 losses. I am not saying he is a bad coach by no means but he did have talent at Westmont for alot of years. He always had size and shooters (usually a winning combination).

Overrated? Didn't he win over 200 games at Westmont? What did WH do before he got there, that's right, nothing. Sure he had talent. Show me a coach that wins championships without talent. The coach before him had tons of talent, what did he do with it. Coach K gets 4-5 McDonald's All-Americans every year at Duke. Yet he doesn't win the NCAA's every year. Checking maxpreps Johnstown was 13-15 last year. This year they are 11-3. Do you know what it takes to build a program? Do you know the obstacles that Roman was facing when he took that job? Overrated, do you know that his starting and back up point guard are wrestlers? Now that's what I call coaching. You say he always had size and shooters well Roman has neither this year and Johnstown is winning. Wait until his program is in place then see how overrated he is. He didn't bail on Westmont. Like colonelsanders said in an old post, he left for a number of reasons on of them was because the administration wouldn't cooperate with him for another paid assistant at the junior high level.

Those at Westmont should be kissing the ground he walks on and thanking him for what he did with that program. An average of about 20 wins over a 10 year period is phenomenal. Don't kid yourself...Roman did NOT have talent at Westmont, rather he DEVELOPED and CULTIVATED talented players through his coaching and off-season programs.

Roman leaving had nothing to do with the talent he had coming back at Westmont, and everything to do with a new challenge and opportunity. DR took Westmont just abvout as far as he was going to take them (or as far as anyone else could take them, for that matter), by going undefeated until losing in the PIAA playoffs in the 2nd or 3rd round.

Westmont had size and shooters??? I never recall any 6'6" or 6'7" kids being there during his tenure...He developed guards, and guard play is the most important thing to develop in terms of basketball skills at the HS level...and as far as shooters, he MADE kids who were decent athletes quality shooters.

Westmonters who think Roman was overrated are as ridiculous as those who are calling for their current coach's head so quickly.

Wow arent we all so quick to criticize both of these coaches. Roman has already made an impact on our program and was a great coach at Westmont. Give him time and Im sure the Trojans will be a force. JHS has always had talent, and I think from what I see coach is just getting the other stuff in order...discipline and teamwork.
The Coach at Westmont needs time to get his program in order. Its not that Roman left it badly, which he didnt. He came to Westmont which was on the upswing after warner (former Trojan coach) had if for many losing years. The next coach Callihan (former Trojan) had 4 or 5 very successful years with lots of wins, yet couldnt win a title. Roman came in and won. Sure he had a big guy about 6'8 whose name escapes me, but he didnt have him for all of the years he was there. I have never coached at this level, and never will, but I know that it takes time to build after a coach leaves, no matter what the situation.

I recall Hindenlang (who went on to play at UofDelaware) playing for Westmont...That may have been Roman's 1st year...
