The Crimson Preseason Poll.
1. Alabama. Wk. 1- San Jose State. The Tide are the defending Champs, and I couldn't rate them any lower then One, The Rushing attack of Ingram and Richardson is lethal, and McElroy has top notch targets, most notably Julio Jones. The Defense is a concern, but Saban isn't replacing these guys with scrubs. He's been the top recruiter since returning to the College Game. Alabama is in the Title game until they lose.
2.Ohio State. Wk. 1- Marshall. The Buckeyes led by Terrelle Pryor are finally ready to take that step to National contender. They have a veteran Line, good receivers, and a Heisman Frontrunner in TP. He was the leading rusher for them last year, and I don't think he should be again. Saine or Herron need to help him carry the load. The Defense is strong, with All American candidates, in DE Cam Heyward(son of Ironhead) and CB Chimdi Chekwa. The Buckeyes get most of their tough games in the 'Shoe, except for the showdown in Iowa.
Could be another BCS Tittle appearance/drubbing by an SEC team.
3. Nebraska. Wk 1 -Western Kentucky. I have the Hushers a little higher then most. But I like what Bo Pelini has done down there. He has built Nebraska the way they should built. With a run-oriented offense, and a Black Shirt caliber Defense. The D once again can have one of the best players in the country. Jared Crick, is a force at rushing the QB from the DT position. And the Secondary returns 3, perfect for defending the pass heavy Big 12. The offense returns their QB, in Zac Lee. And the running game will be very effective, with 4 linemen returning and hard runner, Roy Helu Jr, back for one more year. The schedule is favorable, the North is always weak, and they don't have Oklahoma, and the The Texas game is in Lincoln.
Lot to like about Nebraska this year.
4. Boise State. Wk 1-Virginia Tech(in DC). The Broncos went 14-0 last season, and haven't lost many game over the past few seasons. They do have a legit QB in Kellen Moore and a 1,000 yard rusher and receiver. The offense will put up points. And will rarely be tested, well except for week 1. Virginia Tech is basically the whole country's hope for anyone to beat Boise. I think Boise will struggle with the physical play of Va Tech. We'll find out I guess.
5. Oklahoma. Wk 1- Utah State. Oklahoma looks to be a solid title contender. Landry Jones did a nice job of filling in for Sam Bradford. And looks to have a break out season. He has the weapons to make it happen. DeMarco Murray is a very gifted back, with tremendous athleticism.He will make things easy for Jones, as will Ryan Broyles, Jones' top target. OU's defense lost a lot, but Stoops won't be going at it with lack or talent, just inexperience. The schedule early on does the Sooners no favors. They play Florida State and go to Cincinnati, and of course the game with Texas. If they can get rolling early on, watch out.
6. Virginia Tech . Wk 1-Boise State. The Hokies are coming off another 10 win season, a common occurrence for the VT faithful. The offense will have no problem. Ty Taylor is back for his senior season. He is a very athletic, playmaking QB. He has both of his Receivers back, in Boykin and Coale. And to relieve any problems with the passing game, they have 2 great backs, that will make this offense very effective. Ryan Williams and Darren Evans are a great 1-2 punch. The Defense lost a lot, but Bud Foster may be the best coordinator in the land. He will have his D competitive, and they will be led by Barquell Rivers.
VT's opening game can say a lot for the rest of their season.
7. Florida. Wk 1- Miami(oh). Well life after Tebow begins. And Brantley is the man that has to follow that act, yikes. I've heard nothing but good things about him. He's a strong armed Qb, that won't be nearly as mobile as TT. Well he won't have a lack of athletes around him. Demps returns at RB after a very productive season for a Back in that offense. The receivers are experienced and should help ease the transition. The Defense returns 5 starters, and will be very athletic. The SEC schedule is brutal as always, with a trip to Alabama this year. They also play in state teams, FSU and USF. This team won't contend the way they did the past 4 seasons, but they still will put together a good year.
8. Texas. Wk 1-At Rice(Reliant Stadium) Well they lose a ton of talent, including star QB, Colt McCoy. But Garrett Gilbert gained valuable experience. Texas will always be a top 10 team. They have plenty of unproven guys, but Mack Brown sits well with getting just about any recruit he wants. This team's talent is right on par with every other team in the Top 10. Newton had a good year as freshmen at Running Back, and Kirkendoll and converted Qb, John Chiles will make the receiving core strong. The Texas D losses some star power, but bring back some good guys in the secondary. That will be the strength of the D. October is a big month for this team, with games against Oklahoma and Nebraska.
9. Oregon. Wk 1- New Mexico. If Masoli wasn't an idiot, this ranking would definitely be higher. But things happen, nonetheless they are still favorites in the PAC 10. LaMichael James was one of the best freshmen in the nation last year, and he is a big time back. He was the luxury of having all 5 returning linemen ahead of him still. And the receiving core, with all 3 coming back, will make life easier for Costa or Thomas, the new QB's. Oregon returns 17 starters in all, and 8 on the Defensive side of the ball. This team is poised for another Rose Bowl run.
10. Iowa. Wk 1-Eastern Illinois. Iowa's 9-0 start last year surprised just about everyone. Qb Ricky Stanzi had a good year managing the team, and needs to cut the 15 interceptions this year for this team to be real successful. The Sophomore RB tandem of Robinson and Wegher is a good 1-2 punch. And Iowa's Johnson-Koulianos is back, and is Iowa's leading receiver for all time. Their offense should be able to put up the numbers, and the Defense will hold the other team's numbers off the board. 8 back, including the imposing defensive line and all 4 starters back there. Iowa is ready for another big run, and would love a Rose Bowl trip.
11. Pitt. Wk 1-At Utah 4 spots higher then what the National Media thinks, but I think this is a pretty good team all bias aside. Lewis is as good of a runner as you will see, and Baldwin is right there with anyone. Only Alabama can match a RB-WR combo like the one at Pitt. The Line losses some key components, but Jason Pinkston is a legit All American caliber Tackle. Defensively, Romeus and Sheard are some of the best Ends in the land. Athletically, this is Pitt's Defense in a long long time. The Schedule isn't a cake walk, but theres no games that aren't winnable.
12. USC. Wk 1- at Hawaii USC can't compete for Bowl games, but they are still a top 15 caliber team. And actually have as much talent as anyone in the country. My main concern is, since its a "lame duck" type season..I'm not sure how inspired they will be to play. But Barkley looks to be a future Heisman candidate, and all of his skill positions are 5 star recruits. The D is good is always. But how will things be with Lane Kiffin as opposed to Pete Carroll. I hate Kiffin and can only pray for failure.
13. TCU Wk 1- Oregon State(arlington) TCU returns 16 starters froma 12-1 team last season. The Defense is this team's calling card, they lose some good players but, they have 7 guys back that finished as the #1 defense in the country. Offensively, Andy Dalton returns for his senior campaign, with 3 returning starters at Receiver. This team put up lots of points last year, and they have 9 starters back. This team may have the chance of running the table again, the big games are Oregon State and at Utah late in the season.
14. Florida State. Wk 1-Samford The Seminoles open the season with somebody else besides Bowden as the coach. And the schedule makers gave no help to new coach Jimbo Fisher, with games at OU,adn Miami. And home dates with BYU,UNC, and Florida. The Offense is in Christian Ponder's hands, and thats a good thing because he's a good QB. He has his whole line back, and that will give him the time to make plays. The Defense brings 6 starters back from a disappointing season. But things should improve. I really like FSU this season. May be the year they can beat both In State rivals.
15. Miami. Wk 1-Florida A&M Miami is starting to get back to National prominence, Jacory Harris is a very good QB, but needs to limit his mistakes. He has good skilled players to spread the wealth too, The U's D, may finally be ready tobe a force. They bring 8 starters with a wealth of talent, led by DE Allen Bailey. The one thing not to like, the schedule. Away games early at Ohio State and Pitt and Clemson. Then FSU,UNC,Va Tech and USF at home. Nothing easy about that.
