D6 Playoff Mess

Post by sportsfan1000 »

We are almost in week four and there is still no explanation for D6 about how they are going to do the AAA playoffs. That is inexcusable. I touched on this in another thread but here is the recap:

Prior to the start of the season there was to be a subregion which consisted of D6/D9 AAA teams. The teams are:

D6AAA
Johnstown
Indian Valley
Bellefonte

D9AAA
Punxsutawney
Bradford
St Mary's
Clearfield

There were to be a total of four teams that made the combined district playoffs which would take two weeks to play.

As of right now the end of the regular season is Nov 5th. PIAA brackets have the winner of the D6/D9 region playing the winner of D4 the weekend of Nov 26th. That leaves two weekends to play. Both D6 and D9 decided to crown their own champions with the winners playing. That winnner to play D4 winner the weekend of Nov 26th. That still leaves only two weeks of playoffs. The D6 website states that all three AAA teams make the playoffs. That would mean it would take two weeks to crown a D6 champion and an additional week to play the D9 winner---for a total of three weeks. All three teams in D6 cannot make the playoffs unless week ten of the regular season was scrapped which would upset a lot of LHAC fans since JHS/FH are scheduled to play that week. If also could affect FH because a win against JHS would be huge points that they could nail down the top seed in AA.

I think D6 will change to only the two teams in D6AAA playing in the championship. I don't think they have much of a choice. However, I think it is disgraceful that we are about a third of the way done with the season and there is still no certainty to this. D6 knew a year ago Hollidaysburg was leaving for the wpial and have had that long to decide what to do. It is not fair the the three schools involved as well as FH that there is no definite in place. I think the district never looked at the calender to see there were only 2 weeks open before they decided to announce all three AAA teams would make the playoffs. If you look at the district website it still says all AAA teams qualify for the playoffs.

Again this does not only affect the three AAA schools but could determine the fate of AA seedings if the tenth game were cancelled. If anyone has any updates or news please post.

D5 had a similar agreement with District 8 in "AA" the last two years and it worked well. Districts 5 and 8 communicated and worked out the details well in advance (months before the season). Seems like District 6 has communication problems and/or are wishy-washy. Wasn't there a situation 2-3 years ago whereby nobody knew if the 10th week would or would not count until week 9 for double-A's??

Bellefonte and Indian Valley have 10th games scheduled as well. Each of them also happens to be scheduled to play 6-AA teams that week. So the ramifications for 5/6-AA seeding are even more significant than you said.

I guess the top 6-AAA seed would still be able to play its scheduled game in any case. It is only the second and third seeds that would have to cancel the 10th week games.

But, like you said, I bet that when all is said and done only the top two 6-AAA teams will make the playoffs/6-AAA championship game and all the 10th games will be played as scheduled.

And here is one last fly in the ointment. Note that no details on the 5/6-AA playoffs have been posted on the D6 football page. I think we are all assuming that only 8 will make the playoffs. Is it possible that that is not final yet either?

I thought that was kind of funny as well that they do not have anything posted for the AA playoff format.

Could you imagine after four weeks the NFL announcing the playoff format? The people that run this district are proving their incompetence.

From a points standpoint, I'm guessing that the week 10 contest between the Trojans and FH will mean nothing. As in the past, the seeds will have been determined by that night. It is what it is.
It ain't over until it's over.

week 10 counts for AA. last year ligonier valley had to scramble to pick up a 10th game against north star so that they could make the playoffs. otherwise they would have gotten 0 points towards the standings and possibly missed the playoffs.
