Super Conference/Playoff thoughts

Post by KirkHerbstreit »

Ok so basically you have 4 super conferences.

Big 10 + 4
SEC + 2
ACC + 2
Pac 16

64 team pole, 4 conference champs are the 4 playoff invitees and are seeded by BCS or Poll rankings at the end of the year.

Of course in this scenario there will be teams left over and possibly some good teams. These teams form into conferences that battle for at large bids. The best way to do this is schedule very tough OOC games. As I've said before, currently teams in the upper echelon have so much to lose by playing these teams, because a loss to them means they are out of the National Championship picture. Now they have no excuses because a conference title and winning the Conference championship means everything.

The remaining 56 teams play for 2 at large bids based off of Strength of schedule, big wins, rankings, and are selected by a committee at the end of the year much like the NCAA tournament.

The Playoff will have two byes during the first week given to the highest ranked or seeded teams. (Yes I know there will be controversy regarding the at large bids as well as the seedings, but so does the final 4 tourney) A seeding show can be presented at the end of the year to announce the teams.

Playoffs
#1 Bye
#2 Bye
#3 at home vs. At Large #6
#4 at home vs. At Large #5

Week2

Final 4 at Bowl Sites

Highest Remaining Seed vs. #1 Seed
Second Highest Remaining Seed vs. # 2 Seed

Championship

Winners of the Final 4.

I think this crowns a true National Champion. It adds plenty of more excitement than bowl games.

Teams that do not make the tournament are invited to bowl games.

So you are saying that in the new format teams WILL schedule tough OOC games, or they won't?

They won't. How could they? Now you have NO crossover games worth a 'crap'. I don't know, man, I kinda like seeing Penn State play Alabama, even if they lose. What's the incentive to play Alabama? How does Boise stay relevant?

I think the 4 at-large bids are good. But let's make sure they are objective.

Should the teams all play a conference only schedule with a maximum of 2 OOC games?

I am not a fan of these big conferences. Right now, every week is a playoff. Don't lose.

No college playoff should have more than 8 teams or it becomes watered down.
