Laurel Valley/United Alumni game
Laurel Valley/United Alumni game
I was told that United was lucky to have 50 fans at last nights Ligonier game.I wasn't able to attend tonight's LV/UHS game. However, my brother-in-law said that cars were parked to the bottom of Buena Vista hill and he estimated a crowd of 4000 people. Shows how much a rivalry means to a community, not to mention how much pride they take in their school. This event looked to be quite the spectacle. Players from both schools have practiced for the last two months under the watch of venerable coaches Jerry Page and Frank Krevetski. Just like the old days! This cross river rivalry has been tied at 22 wins a piece with 3 ties. Should LV players never don pads again, tonight's game will prove to be the tie breaker. Should anyone have the result, please post it here.
Re: Laurel Valley/United Alumni game
The game ended up a 0 - 0 tie with no overtime. The only close scoring opportuniity was a missed 29 yard FG by United. The game was played for the most part between the 30s. Both schools showed off old school power running but I will say that the LBs for both sides played very well. Tubmill if you're right about the tied record then it looks like no one gets bragging rights and everyone gets lots of ice tonight.

0-0 seriously...
Re: Laurel Valley/United Alumni game
it was an outstanding atmosphere with good old-fashioned football. there was the typical united-laurel valley physical play, and some good offensive plays too. it was tough sledding in the mud, suckerfish, so yeah, seriously it was 0-0. not sure what to make of your post.
it did feel like the good old days!

They were too tired for overtime? Both teams must have been ready to hit griffs tavern up, or joy land with me.

No wonder they merged
Re: Laurel Valley/United Alumni game
Kneeslapper,
United and LV didn't merge although it made the most sense. Typical government screwup. Pa legislature forced LV to merge with Ligonier in 1965. Think about it..the resulting Ligonier Valley School District borders the following school districts...Greater Johnstown, Westmont Hilltop, North Star, Mount Pleasant, Greater Latrobe, Derry Area and United. There is a possibility that they touch Conemaugh TWP and Connelsville Area in places. The district encompasses 224 square miles. The average school district in Pa is 90 square miles.....quite a disparity between the average district and the Ligonier District. Students from Seward travel twenty miles to school, when the trip to United is four miles or the trip to Greater Johnstown is probably ten miles.
Laurel Valley High School was very important to it's local community and this rivalry was very important to both United and LV.

If you can't get that to work just google Indiana Gazette and go to the sports section.

Wpbc,
The record I gave is correct so very appropriate that this game ended in a tie.

Cleaver,
I appreciate what I received in the mail! You have done a fantastic job in preserving LV history.
I see that Ligonier's alumni is playing Blacklick Valley this weekend. It just goes to show that the Mounties never had a rival other than LV. Did Ligonier ever play Blacklick Valley? The Rams had a good rivalry with the Vikings back in the old Appalachian days. I'll bet that Ligonier/Blacklick is a hot ticket this weekend. Lol I really hope that Ligonier stays in the Heritage. With the Laurel Valley kids on the team, old rivalries could be rekindled.
