Games of the Week: week 9

1. Catholic War: Bishop Guilfoyle vs Biship McCort - 7-1 vs 5-3
- When I was in Vegas this summer i asked my little Cousin, a sophmore linemen for BG, if they will compete strongly this year he said simply, "Yes". Now his brother who graduated in 2010 laughed him off and said he'd be lucky to win 2 games this year. Looks like little brother knew all in what is the most pleasant success story this year for D6. Now McCort needs this win like no other but BG has to think in the mind set that losing this game, they lose homefield advantage in first round. Looking at the standing if Portage JV and PM win out they will all jump BG for top 4 spots. Now McCort is saying, hey if we lose this and portage, ligonier valley or cambria heights get upsetted by one of these middle road heritage teams we are out of the playoffs. That is what makes this game so intriguing. I will be watching Friday night rooting for my cousin and his school but my prediction is one based solely on McCort's need for a win

2. Portage vs Blairsville: 7-1 vs 5-3
- This is the other game I will have my eyes on when it occurs to that 8 spot in District 6 A. Blairsville has had three good losses to the three 6-1 heritage teams but unfortunately that puts them in a position to not make the playoffs. Portage has stepped up their game. I have no doubt in saying they are the best Westpac team out there after their dominance in recent weeks and Berlin's troubles. Now this is a real chance for Portage to make sure they get homefield in the first round. Blairsville has their own image. Win and your in. Such a big game but my gut has me feeling the need to win, just like in BM vs BG, will have the 5-3 team out on top in a thriller

3. Northern Cambria vs Ligonier Valley: 6-2 vs 7-1
- This game is the marquee game in the heritage but also in D6AA. Now Northern Cambria has many ways of treating this game. They can say this is how they will prove their legitimacy and that PM win was not a fluke. They can say winning the conference is the one major goal they wanted. Then they can say if we win this game we are most likely in the playoffs. Ligonier is just breathing easy after they almost lost last week and put their season in doubts. Now that teir playoff picture is mroe secure they can focus on getting back onto the right track. Torrence will be back and that may be enough to put them over here
- Ligonier Valley wins 35-21

I choose not to put PM HC on because Penns Manor is in the playoffs but really have no control over their seeding fate. I know HC is seeded 7th but i feel their biggest game will be next week against portage. I also choose not to do BA vs Glendale because i think BA will just roll easily. Finally i feel CH will take momentum from last week and roll somerset too. Feel free to comment!!! Always enjoy reading them!

I know Heights is riding high after last week's win over McCort but I have a feeling Somerset is going to come out looking to prove something on their home field. Stull came back last week and it wouldn't surprise me at all if the Eagles pulled this one out. I think at the very least it will be a close game.

I really don't mean to be a prick but I have no doubts as to why you are declaring Portage as the best team in the WestPac. The entire season you have been saying that the Westpac is inferior to the Heritage conference. Now that it looks to be a very real possiblity that the WestPac will win the head to head season series, you may be out of options in trying to prove what you say is truth. The way I see it, your best and probably only "out" is to call Portage the WestPacs best team then hope and pray they get beaten by one of the two Heritage teams on their schedule.

In my opinion, until Berlin is beaten they are and should be considered the best team in the WetsPac. They beat Portage and North Star. If they knock off Windber, they will have beaten the three best teams in the WestPac excluding themselves of course. No other team including Portage can say that. Sorry, but if Berlin wins out they've earned the right to be called the best in their conference.

I respect what you are saying ramblinman. I am not making an out, if Berlin wins out and portage even wins both games close or loses one i am happy to call Berlin the Westpac's best team. I just felt their dominance as of late where Berlin has been struggling makes me feel that Portage is the strongest team now in the westpac. Its similar on how i look at the Heritage, Northern Cambria can win the championship this week but i feel the strongest team right now is penns manor because how they have played lately. Unfortunately when it comes to a playoff system the focus is highly on your performance at the end of the season. Right now Portage looks like the best team in the Westpac and a team that has a real chance at being #2 in D6 to start playoffs

I gotcha. I think Portages dominance of late might be a bit overstated. In the last 3 games they beat Blacklick Valley by 12. I saw BV play Windber, they are not that good. Portage then beat a Windber team that hasn't really beaten anyone of note and then a very bad Conemaugh Township team.

If Windber gets it together and beats Berlin, I then might call Portage the best. Until then I have to give it to Berlin who has done nothing but deserve the title.

Btw, does anyone know how the WestPac would determine a champion if Windber beats Berlin? You could have 3 teams all with one loss in conference play. Berlin beats Portage, Portage beats Windber and Windber beats Berlin. Also, Portage would only have played 8 games inside the conference while Berlin and Windber plays 9. Makes absolutely no sense to me why they schedule some teams playing 9 games and others 8 within the conference. Does the WestPac count games outside the conference? If so, that's just dumb..

I know how they would do it in Idaho. I can only hope that idea never surfaces in Pennsylvania. Sure it will be common opponent first, strength of schedule, Stuff like that. But really good question.
