90's - 2015 penguins all star roster

Post by HockeyGenie »

Coach started this wonderful idea for baseball and I thought I'd translate it to hockey.

Top 6 wingers top 4 defenseman and two back stoppers

LW: Sid C: Mario RW: Jagr
D: Murphy D: Gonchar

LW: Kevin Stevens C: Ron Francis RW: Geno
D: Samuelsson D: Letang

Goalies: Fleury, Barasso and in that order

Good picks. Can't find much fault with that list, though I'm sure someone will.

Not a bad list but tough not to give Paul Coffey the nod... I think I'd bump Gonch and add him. Just lookin' at his numbers in 3 full seasons with the Pens shows how much of a different era this is. 113-103-93. Crazy to think about. The league leader this year may not get to 93.

I agree w/ Coffey! How he slipped my mind, IDK. In place of Gonchar.

Good point 1 & only. He is before my time but my dad likes him and has talked about him. I picked Gonchar because of his tenure and how great of a leader and skill player he was, but it's hard to argue with the 2nd leading points scorer in a defenseman. The only beef id have with Coffey is like you said, the short amount of time he played in a pens uni.

But I agree, Coffey bumps gonch.

Actually, now that I think of it, I'd bump letang. Maybe that's a different story after this postseason but for now I hold Gonchar in higher regard

Like this list Genie, some glaring omissions for me might be Phil Borouque, alexei kovalev and Darius Kaspiritus but I get its only a top 2 line list. Good work.

I thought about Coffey only being there a few years but Ulf only played 3 full years in Pittsburgh too, so kinda makes it a moot point. IMO.

I knew Coffey was good... but man look at his numbers. Unreal. Especially his run with Edmonton... 1985/86 he had 48 goals and 90 assists. That's almost unfathomable.

Coffey is a glorified version of Orr in my opinion, I think in some discussions he should be considered the better player.

Phil Bourque only scored above 40 points once in the NHL... and above 30 3 times. He doesn't make the list if there are 10 lines.

Kovalev had a few good years but nowhere near the people listed.

Good topic for conversation though.... so tough to compare that era to this one. The numbers then were crazy. Look at Barrasso and his numbers would probably be about dead last in the league right now. Won 43 games in 92-93 with a 3.01 GAA .901 sv %.
