Coach Crep's Article

Post by dragbunt »

Coach Bill Creps has an article in the paper today about the best D5 wreslting teams of all time. The article is well written and give a lot of histrory about the PIAA and D5 wrestling. But where I disagree is the listing of the best ever D5 teams for different eras. Coach's article included almost all teams from Bedford and one from NB and one from NS the rest were all Bedford! I know that Bedford has dominated D5 wrestling more than any other team but some other schools had excellent wrestling team that should have been included. I don't have the statistics as coach did but here are some suggestions. Agree or Disagree

Township several years ago had a great team that won districts and had multiple champs

Everett had some great teams and the 70's.

Ridge had a District champ team in 83 with several champs

Berlin had an excellent champ team recently!

From what I could see, he had a difficult task to please everyone. But he seems to only have selected teams that dominated, with at least 5 individual champions. This does narrow it down a great deal and only leaves 6 or so teams that made the cut.

In 1981, Everett's team went undefeated with a 17-0-1 record...Hard to beat that.

it seemed as if creps went by the team with the most individual district champs. not sure how many everett had that year but if they only had a few, then that would explain it. im just curious as to how many teams in district 5 have been ranked number one in the state? i know bedford has at least once, are there any others?

I haven't read Creps's article in the Bedford newspaper nor do I care too. I know how Bedford folks like to put things in a certain perspective. Look at my entry under "new topic" listed in this forum. The 1943 Boswell team had Nine count them "NINE" district champions "the most ever for a D5 team and oh by the way they had five "FIVE" so that you Bedford people can clearly see state semi-finalists. One runner-up and one state champion. Neither feat as been surpassed. Yeah this is from a North Star grad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

jbj, I could be severely mistaken here but I am pretty sure Creps mentioned the Boswell team. Don't have the article with me but almost positive.

Bill isn't that old, but I will step in and stick up for the Somerset County teams. If you look at my top ten, I probably should have mentioned one other Bedford team, but that is subject for debate. My list is based on numbers at the different levels district champs, regionals after 1952 and the most important one is how well each team fended for it's self at states.
