(LHAC) Week 6 Preview
As we enter Week 6 of the ’04 season, many questions still remain unanswered. One things’ for sure, this week’s action will certainly put an end to some of these discussions. Five of the six games look to be competitive here, as playoff positions are slowly beginning to come into focus. Bedford looks to remain perfect, while Forest Hills will try and continue their dominance over CC for the 9th straight season. The Trojans of J-Town will be looking for a little payback against the Huskies, and the Hilltoppers look to throw a wrench into the Crushers’ post-season works, while keeping themselves in the hunt for the AA playoffs. Somerset will try and get back into the win column, while the Rams of Richland try to catch a break and chalk up the first victory of the year.
It’s the best time of the year, as the second half of the season is upon us, with much more than pride on the line.
Central (1-4) @ Bedford (5-0)
The Bedford Bisons have done nothing short of shocking the LHAC in ’04. While it was no secret the Bisons would be returning the services of big time playmaker Troy Harris, there was still the everlasting question of an undersized offensive line. To date, the front seven have been impressive, along with T. Harris, Derrick Harris and some kid named Kyler Ford. Ford has calmly stepped to the forefront for the Bisons, and not just when a field goal was in need. I was very impressed with Ford last week in the exciting victory over CC. While Ford was able to nail the game-winning field goal, his play on defense was much more impressive to me. As a matter of fact, the entire Bedford defense played better than expected. Down 14-0, the Bedford stoppers stiffened and held CC in check for the remainder of the game, yielding only one more score throughout. In the end, the 22 points for CC were not enough and the Bedford Bisons ran their record to a perfect (5-0), along with jumping up to the #2 spot in the current AA playoff standings.
Standing in the Bisons’ way this week will be the 1-win Scarlet Dragons of Central. Being in a tight game one week ago may be the only hope here for Central, as the possibility of a letdown for Bedford could provide for an interesting set of events. Even with the LHAC standing stronger than it’s ever been (top to bottom), there is no amount of letdown that will keep Central in this game longer than 1 quarter.
The speed and athleticism of the Bisons will create havoc for the Dragons, as the Harris’ escapades will open up the offense for fullback Mike Young to once again surpass the century mark. As in the previous weeks, expect at least 100 yards out of T. Harris, as well as some sparks from D. Harris and John Marshall. Look for the Bedford defense to be very stingy here as well, as they will pick apart the only avenue Central possesses. The Dragons and quarterback Colby Hazenstab will live and die by the passing game and unfortunately for Central, this week will not be a pleasant experience in any sense of the word.
Bedford calmly moves to (6-0), while keeping an eye on P-O’s game against Bellwood-Antis. A win for the Bisons coupled with a Mounties loss will move Bedford into the #1 slot in the current AA playoff standings.
Bedford 42, Central 6
Cambria Heights (1-4) @ Penn Cambria (0-5)
So close, yet so far away. Such was the case for the Penn Cambria Panthers one week ago, as they very nearly outlasted Central in the battle of winless teams. In the losing effort, the Panthers were able to post 28 points, after having only scored 6 in the previous 4 weeks combined. I believe this was a sign of what’s to come for PC, as sophomore Matt Holsberger and junior Andrew Choros stepped up in a big way for the Panthers, combining for 4 TD’s and over 175 yards rushing. These may not be the most outstanding stats being thrown up in the LHAC in ’04, but you better believe these two individuals will change the current trend at PC over the next two seasons.
As for Heights, it’s been a season filled with injuries and disappoint, as senior all-purpose back Scott Lane has been slowed due to a leg problem, impeding the only true weapon the Highlanders possess. A Week 3 victory over Central has been the only positive outcome in a very dismal season.
After three weeks of play, I really didn’t know if PC could win a game this season. However, after witnessing the athletes of both PC and CH first-hand, I definitely feel the Panthers will ring up victory #1 here at home.
Expect Holsberger and Choros to once again step up for PC; along with junior quarterback Doug Plunkett adding to the charge. With Lane not playing at 100%, Heights will absolutely have to get the ball to senior Phil Sever and sophomore Jacob Shaffer as much as possible. In order for Sever to get the ball, the offensive line MUST provide some time for quarterback Brian Ranck. This has been a major problem for Heights thus far, resulting in very few receptions for a very good athlete in Sever. Shaffer will likely be called upon to carry the ball on many occasions, but again, the offensive line must step it up if the Highlanders are to have any success at all on the Panthers here in Week 6.
As I see it, the Highlanders front line will not step up to the challenge, as PC will completely blow Heights off the ball on offense and defense. In the end, the numbers will support as much, as the young guns for the Panthers continue to gain confidence in the latter part of the ’04 season. Things begin to look a bit better towards the future for PC, as the Panthers finally claw their way to victory in Week 6.
Penn Cambria 20, Cambria Heights 12
Richland (0-5) @ Somerset (2-3)
Beginning the season with 2 straight victories seemed like the start of a season to remember for Somerset. Since then, 3 consecutive losses (all in Section II) have brought the Eagles high hopes to a screeching halt. With difficult opponents looming in the final three weeks of the season, including back to back trips to CC’s Alumni Field (Bishop Carroll – Week 7, CC – Week 8 ) the Eagles find themselves between a rock and a hard place trying to sneak their way into the AAA playoffs. A Week 9 encounter with Bedford will likely seal Somerset’s fate, as the Eagles will find themselves in a struggle to win just 3 games in ’04.
For the Richland Rams, this Week 6 trek to Somerset County may be just what the doctor ordered, as Richland is desperately in search of their first win in ’04. Expect big things from freshman quarterback Marco Pecora in this game, as I believe he will run and pass his way into the endzone at least 3 times. Hey, how can you doubt the son of wrestling coach legend Pat Pecora? Head Coach Brandon Bailey made a wise choice in bumping the frosh up to the varsity level. Although the Rams are winless to this point, the experience gained from this year’s shortcomings will no doubt pay off down the road.
Although the Rams do display some talent at the Q position, as well as in senior utility man Evan Petro, they still must overcome the skill and speed of Somerset’s Josh Simmons. Well folks, here’s the kicker. Unfortunately, or fortunately depending on who you ask, the Eagles will be without the services of Simmons for this game due to injury. This couldn’t come at a better time for Richland, as they wrap up the last four weeks of the season with teams combining for a (6-14) mark. The Hilltoppers come to town in Week 7, but after this it could be smooth sailing for the Rams, as they take on two 1-win teams in Central and Cambria Heights to end the season. In what has now started as an (0-5) beginning, the Rams can certainly finish out the year winning 3 of their final 4 games and building upon this in the years to come.
I believe Richland will start this equation on the right foot, going into Somerset and beating the Eagles for their first “W” on the year.
It may not be the most exciting game of the season, but it certainly will be a boost for a very young Richland squad.
Richland 22, Somerset 14
Bishop McCort (4-1) @ Westmont (2-3)
With only 4 weeks remaining in the regular season, both Westmont and Bishop McCort will be feeling the pressure, but in entirely different ways. With only 2 wins through the first 5 weeks, the Hilltoppers absolutely must put together 3 more victories in the final 4 weeks if they hope to continue playing beyond Week 9. Westmont has shown they can hang with the best in the conference thus far, but their inability to slam the door on these teams has stepped to the forefront, as the Hilltoppers are currently on the outside looking in.
For Bishop McCort, much lies in the balance, as the remaining four weeks of the regular season will make or break the Crushers. In what may be the most brutal 4-game stretch for any team in the LHAC, McCort finds themselves lining up against teams with a combined (15-5) record, (13-2) excluding the Hilltoppers. The outcomes of these games could propel McCort all the way to the top of the standings with a bit of help, while a loss or two, or three could drop McCort all the way to the #8 spot.
The Crushers have faired well thus far, posting a (4-1) record in the highly competitive Laurel Highlands conference. However, a Week 4 loss to the Bishop Carroll Huskies has raised doubt in the eyes of a few and this weeks’ performance could go a bit further in determining where this Crushers’ squad will sit come playoff time.
For the Hilltoppers, it’s do or die time. Westmont will likely pick up two more victories with ease, as they travel to winless Richland in Week 7 and host 1-win Cambria Heights in Week 9. However, this weeks’ battle with McCort and Week 8’s contest against Forest Hills may very well be the deciding factors for the Hilltoppers in ’04. If Westmont is able to pull off a win over the Crushers or Rangers, they will surpass a 6-win Purchase Line team. Keep in mind, this is assuming PL drops two more games, as they are currently in the #7 spot in the AA playoff standing with a (4-1) record. This would not even be mentioned if it were not a likely scenario, as the Dragons must get past the undefeated Blairsville Bobcats and the once-beaten Laurel Valley Rams to avoid the 3-loss season. In my opinion, PL will cooperate for the Hilltoppers by dropping both of the aforementioned games. This will create quite an interesting scenario for Westmont over the next few weeks, as the elusive wins will have to become a reality for the Hilltoppers to bust into the playoff picture.
Unfortunately for Westmont, I don’t believe Week 6 will work in their favor, as they match-up with, what I still believe to be, the best team in the LHAC at this point. Much criticism has been laid on the Crushers by some of the LHSPORTS faithful, but there will be no denying this teams’ worth if they are able to complete the sweep over the remaining 4 weeks.
Westmont will certainly look to Brad Kanuch to create a spark on this Saturday afternoon fray, while McCort will need to neutralize the speed factor – something they were unable to do in their only loss of the season to BC. It’s apparent to me that McCort has skill in all the right places, but still lacks the defense needed to make this season and conference a lock for the Crushers. Although I believe McCort will win this game, I don’t know if they will be able to contain what lies ahead.
The Westmont defense will need to pressure junior quarterback Mike Sheridan on a regular basis to negate his accuracy, whereas the Westmont offense must capitalize on nearly every possession to remain ahead of the Crushers
I do believe Westmont will continue to play tough, as they will put a scare into the Crushers throughout the first half. However, Bishop McCort will rise to the occasion here, as they put Westmont in their place in the second half. A late TD by Kanuch will close the gap, but the overall outcome will never be in doubt for the Crushers in this one.
Bishop McCort passes their first test in what should be 4 very exciting games leading up to the playoffs.
Bishop McCort 31, Westmont 21
Forest Hills (4-1) @ Central Cambria (3-2)
Going on previous instances, this game may be over before the players even take the field. Luckily for the CC faithful, we get our chance at redemption through this years’ crop of players.
For the past 8 seasons, Forest Hills has completely frustrated Central Cambria, putting together 10 consecutive victories over the Red Devils. Adding to the dismay, the Devils only two losses in 2003 were at the hands of this very team. Oh, it gets worse. CC has been led into the winter sports season earlier than expected by these same Rangers for the past two seasons, with last years’ loss coming on their own field. If there were ever a team and a time for the Devils to break the streak, this is it.
Compounding the problems for the Devils in this years’ contest will be entering Week 6 without the services of standout performer, Ryan Krull. Krull was injured early in the game against Bedford one week ago and will not play this week, as junior Steve Makin and sophomore Corey Faish take over the reigns in the backfield.
In looking ahead to this battle many weeks ago, it was evident the Forest Hills offensive line would create quite a challenge for the Red Devils. Hampered by illness, the Rangers’ line has not been full strength for every game thus far. As a result, the Rangers were handed their lone setback (35-21) against the Bedford Bisons in Week 3. As I’ve eluded to since that loss, things may be different if the Bisons and Rangers happen to meet again in the playoffs – a meeting the Rangers are no doubt fighting for at this point.
I think it’s obvious here that Forest Hills is heading into their usual second half charge, looking to bury the Devils along the way. A victory here over the 3-win Devils will amass 130 points for the Rangers and all but guarantee them a spot in the upcoming AA playoffs.
For the Red Devils, it will be another challenge to overcome, as they must defeat a huge rival, while needing this victory to keep pace in a very strong AA field. A loss here for CC and they may drop out of the top 8, with only 3 more weeks remaining to clinch a berth in the post-season.
As I see it, this game will be won in the trenches, and this is very good news for the Rangers. When healthy, this Rangers front is one of the best in the conference. The Devils will need to provide plenty of time for quarterback Matt Mesaros to create – something he is very skilled at when given a chance. If the Rangers hope to slam the door on the Devils early, they will need to prevent Mesaros from slinging the ball downfield. In my opinion, the longer the Rangers allow CC to move the ball, the less chance they will have of making it 11 straight on the Devils. I believe the secondary of FH is much better than one year ago, but not good enough to hold Mesaros and his receiver corps under wraps without help. The bulk of the pressure will fall upon the shoulders of the Rangers’ defensive line and linebackers, as they absolutely will need to limit Mesaros, both running and throwing. With Krull out of the lineup, expect to see key contributions from the Devils’ possession receivers (Wade Klezek, Derek Natcher, Luke Espe, Augie Rodkey). If these players are not able to get free, it will be a long night in Ebensburg for the Devils.
As for the Rangers, I expect to see Travis Rearick run the show at quarterback all evening. Don Bailey is no dope and I’m sure he will keep the speedy Rearick in the game as opposed to the less mobile James Mehall. CC has had major troubles containing the speed factor through 5 weeks and Rearick will only add to this. Like Forest Hills, CC will have to get into the backfield with some regularity, while also keeping the Rangers’ receivers under control. Rearick has shown the ability to get loose at some opportune moments and with his line healthy and playing to potential, he should be able to do more of the same against the Devils.
I really believe this may be a shootout as far as quarterbacks are concerned, as the Rangers may need to resort to the passing game if the inside gets bottled up, whereas the Devils will absolutely rely on the arm of Mesaros, as he has thrown for over 100 yards in 4 straight games.
I do not believe either team will run the ball with much success, but the passing attacks may be a thing of beauty at CC’s Alumni Field on Friday night. This may not be the year CC breaks the losing streak, but I believe they have the personnel to get it done, once and for all.
In my opinion, this FH squad is not as gifted athletically as they were one year ago, whereas I believe this years’ CC squad is a better overall team than one year ago. It may not mean much, but the Devils very nearly beat the Bisons without the services of one of their best players, whereas the Rangers were beaten by two scores by the Bisons without the services of one of their best players.
CC has been up against the wall in three games this season, winning one (Westmont) and dropping the other two by a combined 9 points. This game will be no different, as the playoffs are right around the corner. CC can win this game and the fact that they don’t have to chase a game-breaker for four quarters will help them get back in the win column.
The LHAC continues to impress, as the Rangers and Devils sport identical (4-2) records after this one.
Central Cambria 19, Forest Hills 14
GAME OF THE WEEK
Bishop Carroll (4-1) @ Johnstown (4-1)
While both teams enter this Week 6 clash with identical (4-1) records, it’s almost eerie to see how much the two squads mirror each other beyond the win-loss column. It was at this time one season ago that Bishop Carroll was able to hold off LaRod Stephens and an undefeated J-Town squad in the friendly confines of CC’s Alumni Field. The fact that cramping hampered Stephens certainly helped, as BC eventually remained unscathed with the 7-6 victory. The ball continued to roll for the Huskies after this victory, as the pressure situation applied by the Trojans lead to 8 more victories in a row before the Huskies eventually fell in the A State Championship game. Although BC is not nearly on the same level this season as they were one year ago, a victory over AAA Johnstown could have the same type of impact over the next few weeks. This is the most difficult game remaining on the schedule for the Huskies, as Weeks 7-9 provide teams with a combined (3-12) record. This game is the deciding factor for Bishop Carroll, as a victory here could possibly enter the Huskies as the #1 seed in the upcoming playoffs with an (8-1) overall record.
As mentioned earlier, the two teams look an awful lot alike, as both possess a gifted running back, an athletic quarterback and average offensive lines. What’s most impressive about the two teams has been their ability to free up the outstanding runners, even with the lack of size and skill on the front line. Don’t get me wrong, both J-Town and BC have some horses on the line, but overall I rank the two units at # 4 and # 6 (respectively) in the LHAC overall.
As far as match-ups are concerned, I fully expect the Johnstown offensive line to open some gaps for LaRod to slip through in the early going. As the game progresses, I believe the Bishop Carroll defense will stiffen and limit the amount of time Stephens will have to scurry through to the second level. This will be in large part to the adjustments made by the coaching staff at BC – a staff I believe is severely underrated.
While J-Town will not put up 6 scores in the first half (as they did one week ago), I really believe they will have success early on, punching in two scores before the Huskies even settle in. Expect Paul Forcellini to once again anchor the Huskies offense, as he is capable of bringing BC right back into the game with a single touch. I believe he will, as the Huskies will absolutely not go away no matter what the score.
In my opinion, Johnstown is the better of the two teams, though not by a whole lot. Bishop Carroll disposed of my lock (Bishop McCort) to win the conference in a game where they completely shocked many in the area. The way the Huskies are playing now, I’m not sure McCort could beat them the second time around. Bishop Carroll, like the Forest Hills Rangers, seems to be trucking along and gaining momentum with each week. If the Huskies are able to contain LaRod, they will win this game. I don’t expect J-Town quarterback Devin Carosi to be nearly as much of a factor as he has been over the past few weeks, as the Trojans will win or lose this game on the shoulders of their main man Stephens.
I do, however, expect Huskies quarterback Joel Takacs to play a major role in this game, as his rushing ability will create another dimension for BC, a dimension I don’t believe Johnstown currently possesses.
Although I do not believe Johnstown is playing as well as they’re capable at this point, I do believe they will play well enough here to win this game. Bishop Carroll has the experience in big games, but the Trojans have the most elusive athlete in the area at their disposal on every offensive play. Knowing LaRod is running right at them will not be enough to get it done, as Stephens will slip out for at least 3 scores on the Bishop Carroll defense. The Crushers have faired well thus far, posting a (4-1) record in the highly competitive Laurel Highlands conference. However, a Week 4 loss to the Bishop Carroll Huskies has raised doubt in the eyes of a few and this weeks’ performance could go a bit further in determining where this Crushers’ squad will sit come playoff time.
For the Hilltoppers, it’s do or die time. Westmont will likely pick up two more victories with ease, as they travel to winless Richland in Week 7 and host 1-win Cambria Heights in Week 9. However, this weeks’ battle with McCort and Week 8’s contest against Forest Hills may very well be the deciding factors for the Hilltoppers in ’04. If Westmont is able to pull off a win over the Crushers or Rangers, they will surpass a 6-win Purchase Line team. Keep in mind, this is assuming PL drops two more games, as they are currently in the #7 spot in the AA playoff standing with a (4-1) record. This would not even be mentioned if it were not a likely scenario, as the Dragons must get past the undefeated Blairsville Bobcats and the once-beaten Laurel Valley Rams to avoid the 3-loss season. In my opinion, PL will cooperate for the Hilltoppers by dropping both of the aforementioned games. This will create quite an interesting scenario for Westmont over the next few weeks, as the elusive wins will have to become a reality for the Hilltoppers to bust into the playoff picture.
Unfortunately for Westmont, I don’t believe Week 6 will work in their favor, as they match-up with, what I still believe to be, the best team in the LHAC at this point. Much criticism has been laid on the Crushers by some of the LHSPORTS faithful, but there will be no denying this teams’ worth if they are able to complete the sweep over the remaining 4 weeks.
Westmont will certainly look to Brad Kanuch to create a spark on this Saturday afternoon fray, while McCort will need to neutralize the speed factor – something they were unable to do in their only loss of the season to BC. It’s apparent to me that McCort has skill in all the right places, but still lacks the defense needed to make this season and conference a lock for the Crushers. Although I believe McCort will win this game, I don’t know if they will be able to contain what lies ahead.
The Westmont defense will need to pressure junior quarterback Mike Sheridan on a regular basis to negate his accuracy, whereas the Westmont offense must capitalize on nearly every possession to remain ahead of the Crushers
I do believe Westmont will continue to play tough, as they will put a scare into the Crushers throughout the first half. However, Bishop McCort will rise to the occasion here, as they put Westmont in their place in the second half. A late TD by Kanuch will close the gap, but the overall outcome will never be in doubt for the Crushers in this one.

Forest Hills (4-1) @ Central Cambria (3-2)
Going on previous instances, this game may be over before the players even take the field. Luckily for the CC faithful, we get our chance at redemption through this years’ crop of players.
For the past 8 seasons, Forest Hills has completely frustrated Central Cambria, putting together 10 consecutive victories over the Red Devils. Adding to the dismay, the Devils only two losses in 2003 were at the hands of this very team. Oh, it gets worse. CC has been led into the winter sports season earlier than expected by these same Rangers for the past two seasons, with last years’ loss coming on their own field. If there were ever a team and a time for the Devils to break the streak, this is it.
Compounding the problems for the Devils in this years’ contest will be entering Week 6 without the services of standout performer, Ryan Krull. Krull was injured early in the game against Bedford one week ago and will not play this week, as junior Steve Makin and sophomore Corey Faish take over the reigns in the backfield.
In looking ahead to this battle many weeks ago, it was evident the Forest Hills offensive line would create quite a challenge for the Red Devils. Hampered by illness, the Rangers’ line has not been full strength for every game thus far. As a result, the Rangers were handed their lone setback (35-21) against the Bedford Bisons in Week 3. As I’ve eluded to since that loss, things may be different if the Bisons and Rangers happen to meet again in the playoffs – a meeting the Rangers are no doubt fighting for at this point.
I think it’s obvious here that Forest Hills is heading into their usual second half charge, looking to bury the Devils along the way. A victory here over the 3-win Devils will amass 130 points for the Rangers and all but guarantee them a spot in the upcoming AA playoffs.
For the Red Devils, it will be another challenge to overcome, as they must defeat a huge rival, while needing this victory to keep pace in a very strong AA field. A loss here for CC and they may drop out of the top 8, with only 3 more weeks remaining to clinch a berth in the post-season.
As I see it, this game will be won in the trenches, and this is very good news for the Rangers. When healthy, this Rangers front is one of the best in the conference. The Devils will need to provide plenty of time for quarterback Matt Mesaros to create – something he is very skilled at when given a chance. If the Rangers hope to slam the door on the Devils early, they will need to prevent Mesaros from slinging the ball downfield. In my opinion, the longer the Rangers allow CC to move the ball, the less chance they will have of making it 11 straight on the Devils. I believe the secondary of FH is much better than one year ago, but not good enough to hold Mesaros and his receiver corps under wraps without help. The bulk of the pressure will fall upon the shoulders of the Rangers’ defensive line and linebackers, as they absolutely will need to limit Mesaros, both running and throwing. With Krull out of the lineup, expect to see key contributions from the Devils’ possession receivers (Wade Klezek, Derek Natcher, Luke Espe, Augie Rodkey). If these players are not able to get free, it will be a long night in Ebensburg for the Devils.
As for the Rangers, I expect to see Travis Rearick run the show at quarterback all evening. Don Bailey is no dope and I’m sure he will keep the speedy Rearick in the game as opposed to the less mobile James Mehall. CC has had major troubles containing the speed factor through 5 weeks and Rearick will only add to this. Like Forest Hills, CC will have to get into the backfield with some regularity, while also keeping the Rangers’ receivers under control. Rearick has shown the ability to get loose at some opportune moments and with his line healthy and playing to potential, he should be able to do more of the same against the Devils.
I really believe this may be a shootout as far as quarterbacks are concerned, as the Rangers may need to resort to the passing game if the inside gets bottled up, whereas the Devils will absolutely rely on the arm of Mesaros, as he has thrown for over 100 yards in 4 straight games.
I do not believe either team will run the ball with much success, but the passing attacks may be a thing of beauty at CC’s Alumni Field on Friday night. This may not be the year CC breaks the losing streak, but I believe they have the personnel to get it done, once and for all.
In my opinion, this FH squad is not as gifted athletically as they were one year ago, whereas I believe this years’ CC squad is a better overall team than one year ago. It may not mean much, but the Devils very nearly beat the Bisons without the services of one of their best players, whereas the Rangers were beaten by two scores by the Bisons without the services of one of their best players.
CC has been up against the wall in three games this season, winning one (Westmont) and dropping the other two by a combined 9 points. This game will be no different, as the playoffs are right around the corner. CC can win this game and the fact that they don’t have to chase a game-breaker for four quarters will help them get back in the win column.
The LHAC continues to impress, as the Rangers and Devils sport identical (4-2) records after this one.

GAME OF THE WEEK
Bishop Carroll (4-1) @ Johnstown (4-1)
While both teams enter this Week 6 clash with identical (4-1) records, it’s almost eerie to see how much the two squads mirror each other beyond the win-loss column. It was at this time one season ago that Bishop Carroll was able to hold off LaRod Stephens and an undefeated J-Town squad in the friendly confines of CC’s Alumni Field. The fact that cramping hampered Stephens certainly helped, as BC eventually remained unscathed with the 7-6 victory. The ball continued to roll for the Huskies after this victory, as the pressure situation applied by the Trojans lead to 8 more victories in a row before the Huskies eventually fell in the A State Championship game. Although BC is not nearly on the same level this season as they were one year ago, a victory over AAA Johnstown could have the same type of impact over the next few weeks. This is the most difficult game remaining on the schedule for the Huskies, as Weeks 7-9 provide teams with a combined (3-12) record. This game is the deciding factor for Bishop Carroll, as a victory here could possibly enter the Huskies as the #1 seed in the upcoming playoffs with an (8-1) overall record.
As mentioned earlier, the two teams look an awful lot alike, as both possess a gifted running back, an athletic quarterback and average offensive lines. What’s most impressive about the two teams has been their ability to free up the outstanding runners, even with the lack of size and skill on the front line. Don’t get me wrong, both J-Town and BC have some horses on the line, but overall I rank the two units at # 4 and # 6 (respectively) in the LHAC overall.
As far as match-ups are concerned, I fully expect the Johnstown offensive line to open some gaps for LaRod to slip through in the early going. As the game progresses, I believe the Bishop Carroll defense will stiffen and limit the amount of time Stephens will have to scurry through to the second level. This will be in large part to the adjustments made by the coaching staff at BC – a staff I believe is severely underrated.
While J-Town will not put up 6 scores in the first half (as they did one week ago), I really believe they will have success early on, punching in two scores before the Huskies even settle in. Expect Paul Forcellini to once again anchor the Huskies offense, as he is capable of bringing BC right back into the game with a single touch. I believe he will, as the Huskies will absolutely not go away no matter what the score.
In my opinion, Johnstown is the better of the two teams, though not by a whole lot. Bishop Carroll disposed of my lock (Bishop McCort) to win the conference in a game where they completely shocked many in the area. The way the Huskies are playing now, I’m not sure McCort could beat them the second time around. Bishop Carroll, like the Forest Hills Rangers, seems to be trucking along and gaining momentum with each week. If the Huskies are able to contain LaRod, they will win this game. I don’t expect J-Town quarterback Devin Carosi to be nearly as much of a factor as he has been over the past few weeks, as the Trojans will win or lose this game on the shoulders of their main man Stephens.
I do, however, expect Huskies quarterback Joel Takacs to play a major role in this game, as his rushing ability will create another dimension for BC, a dimension I don’t believe Johnstown currently possesses.
Although I do not believe Johnstown is playing as well as they’re capable at this point, I do believe they will play well enough here to win this game. Bishop Carroll has the experience in big games, but the Trojans have the most elusive athlete in the area at their disposal on every offensive play. Knowing LaRod is running right at them will not be enough to get it done, as Stephens will slip out for at least 3 scores on the Bishop Carroll defense. I do expect BC to keep pace with the skill of Forcellini and Takacs, but I don’t think it will be quite enough in the end, as J-Town gets redemption from one year ago. The playoff points earned will not be a tremendous boost for the Trojans, but the opponent in which the points were earned will certainly be a huge mental victory for Johnstown.
BC drops their second of the season, but it will be the last blemish on the Huskies record for quite a few weeks.

I'll be mean and say it .....but has anyone else noticed, that as good as his post are, Jozey22 has never predicted a CC loss?...(I just double checked his week 2 and 5 previews and sure enough, Devils over McCort and over Bedford but neither happened)

I know that I would never ever ever say that my team that I played for and graduated from and still watch week in and week out to lose. NEVER. He has alot of Pride in his CC roots, I have alot of Pride in my Bedford roots. There is not a problem in the world to go with you team.

You're not being mean by making that statement. You're not the first to notice my trend and I'm sure you won't be the last. Truth is, I've only picked against CC 5 times in the previous 4 seasons. Unfortunately, I was right each time.
Now, just to be fair, don't you think the picks over McCort and Bedford were possible? CC lost these two contests by a combined 9 points. I expect criticism when I make a strange pick or a bold prediction, but CC could have won both of those games. They didn't and now we're having this discussion.
I will support CC to the end, but I will pick against them if I believe they cannot win the game in question. Such could be the case this week, as CC locks horns with FH. I think the easy pick would be the Rangers, as they have had the Devils' number for the past 8 seasons. I don't know... it just seems too easy to pick the obvious sometimes.

I'm with you and as said...I will pull for a Devil win just to see how wild that "AA" playoff gets....What d-6 teams are the closest to clinching a spot?? Bed & CR are in with the D-5 automatics but deserve the spots too...or is there only one D-5 automatic in "AA".
Also PO and probably Tyrone are "locks" with a look at their schedule...
The FH-CC winner goes a long way towards clinching too although both will probably make it.
