Study: 27 of 56 bowl teams graduate less than half their players

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) Twenty-seven of the 56 schools with bowl-bound football teams graduated less than half their players, a study released Tuesday shows.

The study by the Institute of Diversity and Ethics in Sports at the University of Central Florida also showed that 39 of the schools graduated less than half of their black players. Only six schools graduated a higher percentage of black players than white players.

``Race remains a persistent academic issue, reflected in the continuing gap between graduation rates for white and African-American student-athletes,'' said Richard Lapchick, author of the study.

Among the bowl teams, 51 of 55 graduated at least 40 percent of their white players, according to the study, while just 30 schools graduated at least 40 percent of their black players. Navy does not report graduation rates.

The schools with the worst graduation rates, both overall and for black players, were Pittsburgh, UTEP and Texas.

Syracuse, Notre Dame and Boston College had the best graduation rates overall and for black players.

The institute used NCAA statistics for the study. The statistics were taken from four freshman classes, beginning in 1994-95 and ending in '97-98, with each class given six years to graduate.

Well HUH, go figure. Not a lot to write about that. Schools are more and more becoming bowl hungry, and just getting the athletes by in school work.

Is there a study on what percentage of the bowl teams players make it to the pros? Just wondering if it is benificial to go after pure talent rather thatn worrying about academics!

I believe that only "28" percent actually make it to the pros. Then after the five years it takes to get a pension, from the N.F.L. only '18" percent are still around for that.

Its frigging stupid. I think it should be mandatory that every player play a full 4 years, wether you redshirt your freshman or not. you are on the team for 4 years. Those 4 years you should have to have a C avg..honestly, college isnt that hard. If you put SOME effort in, you can get a c..Then maybe these guys wont go off doing the dumb junk they do in the pros. bad money management, stupid decisions. But thats my opinion. If a college wants you bad enough to offer your a full ride, use it, get an education, and then use it after playing for 8 yrs in the pros. Be like, hey, i went to college for say buisness management, play in the pros, get your millions, then start a buisness about how to manage money properally and teach all those College flunkies how to keep the money they make, and not blow 8 million in two years, by buying ridiculus cars, huge systems lavish houses, stupid stuff you dont need. Now granted, i would buy a nice car, like a beemer, but nothing insane, The system in it could be tweaked, maybe like a 500 dollar thing is more then enough. A nice house, 60 thous. So your set back maybe 150 thous of that 2 million salaray that you got for playing 3 years. You dont have any debts, college was paid for. you got a FREE education, a house, a car..you dont need a credit card. So no worries about debt. Put half that salary into the stock market/bank. and let it sit, for when your old, or your kids are going to college. make a deal with them either get scholarships. or be A-B student, and we pay for you. Then start a buisness, and have it set for the rest of your life.

We need to stop having illusions about student-athletes. There are many student athletes in every college, but many of them are not playing football or basketball. FB and BB are the obvious cash cows for any big time university. These athletes are there to make money for the school. If they qualify for a bowl games, the schools get money. If they have winninng seasons, the school gets more applicants and a better selection of students. If they win games, more school merchandise is sold.

In return the FB and BB athletes are given the opportunity to obtain a free college education. Some athletes take advantage of it, but many others do not. That is their choice. I wonder how many college credits these kids would have if they didn't have a scholarship?

It’s usually because they leave early. Remember athletes have four years of eligibility, sometimes five as per the appeals process.

With regard to not meeting requirements, I'm sure a way is found for most struggling student-athletes to stay academically eligible. In other words, they'll meet their graduation requirements if they stay four years.

There are exceptions, but this is a more frequent occurrence than many thing. I recommend you rent The Program, if you haven't already seen it.

Once a Runner, that last paragraph of yours hit the nail right on the head. That is also exactly why those kids should NOT get paid while in college.
