Since 1978, the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown Alumni Association has sponsored the Mountain Cat High School Boys Basketball Tournament and has gained the reputation for showcasing talented area teams and players in the two-day event.
Three former participants in UPJ's high school tournament are now current members of the Mountain Cats men's squad.
Senior Paul Byer, a 6-foot-6 guard/forward, was a two-time MVP in the Mountain Cat Tournament playing for Conemaugh Township while 6-1 junior guard Dwight Hines was the recipient of MVP honors in 2001 playing for Aliquippa.
Nick Mezyk, a 6-2 junior guard for the Mountain Cats, was a member of the UPJ All-Tournament team in 2000 and 2001, playing for Westmont Hilltop.
The 27th basketball classic, which marks the unofficial beginning of the holiday hoops season, is set for Friday and Saturday at the UPJ Sports Center with Conemaugh Township, Forest Hills, Richland and Shanksville-Stonycreek displaying their respective basketball prowess.
On Friday, the Vikings will play the Rams in the opener, set for 7 p.m., while the Indians will face the Rangers in the nightcap. On Saturday, the consolation is set for 7, followed by the title tilt.
The Latrobe Junior Pro Drill Team and North Star East Seventh and Eighth Grade Girls Dribbling Team will be in attendance again this year.
Ernest J. Mantini will serve as the UPJ tournament chairman for the 20th year.

I hate to sound like a cry baby, & Maybe I am. (BUT) After seeing some of the last three to four years worth of basketball up there. The politics was killiing ME. Needless to say, the officiating too. I like the teams that they try to bring in, but it's the way the games are officiated. Dist #5/6 lacks good refs for games of this magnitude. After living down here in "W.P.I.A.L. Land". I just can't bring myself to drive '60" miles in the dead of winter,for this kind of abuse. No one especially the kids teams can be justified. The westy Tournament is even better than what goes on at U.P.J. these days. (Just quit charging so much)
