Mechanicsburg QB heads (AAA) all-state
12/20/2004,
The Associated Press:

(AP) — Mechanicsburg junior quarterback Zach Frazer didn't make it to the biggest stage in Pennsylvania high school football, but he and two teammates didn't have to. The bright lights found them.

Frazer, a 6-foot-4, 220-pound junior, had the most productive passing yardage season in Pennsylvania high school football history, throwing for a state-record 3,674 yards in 13 games.

Frazer's season got Mechanicsburg only as far as a District 3 Class AAA final loss to PIAA runnerup Manheim Central, but it was enough to make him The Associated Press Class AAA player of the year.

Frazer's coattails were long enough to pull two other Mechanicsburg players to the first team: tight end Josh Koontz, who caught 81 passes for 1,405 yards and 12 touchdowns, and Jeremy Boone, who repeats as the first team punter. Boone averaged 45.2 yards on 30 punts and caught 84 passes for 1,083 yards and seven touchdowns.

PIAA champion Thomas Jefferson leads the team with four players after bouncing back from two regular-season losses to win seven consecutive playoff games, defeating defending champion Manheim Central 56-20 for the AAA title.

The Jaguars are represented by first-team offensive lineman Jon Consoli, linebacker Nate Nix and defensive back Brad Dawson and second-team linebacker Jason Kolodziej. Dawson starred on both sides of the ball, passing for more than 2,000 yards and returning five touchdowns for interceptions.

TJ coach Bill Cherpak, a former Pitt player, was the runaway winner in the coach of the year balloting of writers and broadcasters.

PIAA semifinalist Erie Strong Vincent, District 7's West Allegheny, District 1's Interboro and longtime power Berwick were among those with multiple all-staters.

Strong Vincent had its best team since its 1991 state championship squad, losing 21-20 on a blocked extra point to Thomas Jefferson in the AAA Western Region final. Defensive lineman Christian Fleming and defensive back Andre Henderson made the first team and running back Mario Henry is on the second team.

West Allegheny, unbeaten before being upset in its district semifinals by West Mifflin, is represented by offensive lineman C.J. Davis, who is getting high-level Division I recruiting attention, and offensive specialist Dorin Dickerson. Dickerson rushed for more than 1,000 yards, had another 517 yards receiving, scored 21 touchdowns and was the Indians' leading tackler.

Interboro did not qualify for the smallish District 1 Class AAA field, but has two excellent players who are being heavily recruited, offensive lineman Zack Anderson and linebacker Sean Wasson.

The other first-team offensive players are wide receivers Ryan Shuck of Selinsgrove and Dave Horton of Allentown Central Catholic, offensive linemen John Bachman of Moon and Josh Gregor of Lower Dauphin, running backs LaRod Stephens of Johnstown, Brant Quick of Berwick and Jeremy Bruce of Blackhawk, specialists Tony Canci of Sun Valley and Desmond Brentley of Perry and kicker Craig Bunney of Ambridge.

Stephens, a Pitt recruit, also was a first-team selection last year. Quick, a junior, rushed for more than 2,200 yards this season and already is Berwick's all-time leading rusher.

Joining Fleming on the first-team defensive line are Berwick's Keith Ball, West Mifflin's Kevin Garner and Bethlehem Catholic's Matt Kudshner. Penncrest's Terrance Jackson and Manheim Central's Jeremiha Hunter are the first-team linebackers, along with Wasson and Nix. Also in the first-team defensive backfield are Aaron Smith of Jim Thorpe and Hershey's Brock Smith
