You need no introduction to Bill Cowher. One of his daughters, Meagan, had a stellar basketball career at Fox Chapel, and now another Cowher is putting herself in the spotlight with the Foxes.
Lauren Cowher, a 5-foot-7 junior guard, is having an excellent season for the Foxes’ girls’ team. She has scored in double figures in 10 of 13 games. She is averaging 16 points in those 10 games.
Meagan was the top scorer at Fox Chapel in recent years. But with her graduation, Lauren has become more of a scorer. She has turned into one of the top guards in W.P.I.A.L. Class (AAAA) basketball.
Meagan Stars at Princeton
Meagan Cowher is having quite an impact in her first season at Princeton University.
Cowher, a 6-foot-1 junior guard, scored a career-high 28 points against St. Peter’s Monday (Jan. 3). Two days later, she had 19 points and 12 rebounds against Army.
Princeton has a 7-5 record and Cowher has started all 12 games. She is the team’s leading scorer with a 12.8 average while playing 32 minutes a game. She is shooting 50 percent from the field and is averaging 5.7 rebounds.
Where are They Now ????????????????
The Westminster College Titans have been the talk of district college basketball lately because of their style of play.
The Titans average 109 points a game while allowing 107. They average an incredible 55 3-point shots a game.
And all four of their leading scorers are from WPIAL schools, including three from New Castle.
Guard Mark DeMonaco, guard Ed Pagley and forward Dom Joseph are all from New Castle. Forward Pat O’Connor is from Keystone Oaks.
DeMonaco averages 19.8 points a game and has made 56 3-pointers in 120 attempts. Pagley averages 14.8 points and has made 50 of 138 behind the arc. O’Connor averages 13.7 and has made 31 of 128 3-pointers. Joseph averages 13.0 and has made 13 of 45 3-pointers.
It’s Sold Out...............
Tonight’s game (Jan. 7) between Aliquippa and Beaver Falls is one of the best of the young season.
They are two of the top teams in the WPIAL and their contests are always interesting.
But if you want to go and don’t have a ticket, forget it. The game is a sellout as of Thursday.

North Allegheny is supposed to hire a football coach this month.
West Allegheny’s Bob Palko is not involved with the job, as had been rumored.
However Pittsburgh Central Catholic’s Art Walker Jr. and Bethel Park’s Jeff Metheny are involved.
And here’s a new name to throw into the ring – Hopewell’s Dave Vestal.
Big "33" Coaches
Speaking of Bob Palko, he will be Pennsylvania’s coach at the Big "33" all-star game July 23 in Hershey.
Two of his assistants are also from W.P.I.A.L. schools.
They are Bethel Park’s Metheny and South Park’s Tom Loughran. Other Pennsylvania assistants are Dick Beck of North Penn, Mark Evans of ELCO and Rich Mauck of Northern.
One to Watch~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Colin Johnston. Remember the name. You might be hearing it a lot in wrestling circles for the next few years.
Johnston is a freshman wrestler at Canon-McMillan High School. He won the 103-pound division at the Powerade Tournament Dec. 30.
The Powerade Tournament includes top wrestlers from the WPIAL, Eastern Pennsylvania and a few other states.
Johnston has a chance to put himself in some elite company at the tournament.
The only other wrestler to win four Powerade championships was Ty Moore, a legendary wrestler at North Allegheny who won four state championships.
Football Recruiting%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
New Pitt coach Dave Wannstedt got his first W.P.I.A.L. recruit a few days ago when Duquesne running back Shane Brooks committed to the Panthers.
Could a few more W.P.I.A.L. players be on the way?????????????????????

The Panthers are still involved with Pittsburgh Central Catholic tight end John Pelusi, Vikings quarterback Shane Murray and Monessen fullback-linebacker Mick Williams.
Pelusi is the most highly recruited of those players. He has visited Pitt and has January visits planned to Northwestern, Stanford and Connecticut.
Williams will visit Pitt this weekend. He will then go to West Virginia and possibly one other school before making a decision.
