I just found some numbers on the PIAA website that some of you might enjoy. Here are the PIAA baseball classifications for 2004-2006. Therefore, the numbers below are the total number of males in each school for grades 9-12. Thats why I get irriated when I read that NBC had a big win over Forbes Road or Hyndman and how great Chestnut Ridge is in every sport yet they don't win. Anyway, here are the numbers:

Chestnut Ridge......................268 males (AA)
Everett..................................215 males (AA)
Tussey Mountain....................161 males (A)
Northern Bedford...................148 males (A)
McConnellsburg......................119 males (A)
Southern Fulton......................113 males (A)
Hyndman...............................62 males (A)
Forbes Road...........................61 males (A)
Fannett-Metal..........................54 males (A)

More than half of these schools do not even have enough males to support football yet the administration at Chestnut Ridge and Everett chose to compete against these teams in all other sports. To go even further, Chestnut Ridge has the highest enrollment in District 5 yet competes against Fannett-Metal and Forbes Road. All some of these school have to do is look at neighboring Bedford. They at least chose to join the LHAC knowing the best competetion for a school their size is in District 6.

once again, before this gets into a "We all hate ridge" thread...the students do not get to decide what conference they are in. That's up to the AD and the school, don't take it out on the kids.

I don't hate Chestnut Ridge, I think it is pathetic that Everett, NBC, and Tussey Mountain, as well as Chestnut Ridge, competes in this conference . I'm just trying to provide the facts and those numbers should not deceive anyone. Take the info for what it is worth.

i'd rather be in the LHAC...do you think we enjoy all the whining everyone does about how we play small schools? no. I'd rather get my butt kicked by bigger schools than have everyone complain about our schedule.

Let's not mention that for the three smallest schools, baseball is the only choice for male athletes. I think to support two male spring sports and be competitive...enrollment should be a little more than the schools that have one....

Big Man:

Don't lump NB with the "AA's" so quickly. right now there is a disproportionate amount of boys to girls in that school. For instance, look at the girls enrollments....

McConnellsburg 116
S.Fulton 112
N.Bedford 109
F-Metal 85

Not such a big difference is there????????????????

Normal for NB is about 125-130 for both boys and girls. McConnellsburg has had boys and/or girls enrollments in the past in the 140's also in disproportionate years.

Even at 148...they have track too...there are about 30 guys on the track team this year.

I guess there should be a 3 team conference? NBC isn't much bigger than Mc or SF really.....

I wouldn't throw NBC in that list, they play where they belong, the other two though....

Even at the 148, as coach said....with 2 spring sports, the are split in half so it's like having 74 available for each sport (if all things were equal). 74 is no huge advantage over Hyndman's available participants (62), Forbes Road's (61) or F-M's (54) and the advantage in Softball would actually go to the three school's mentioned here over Northern!

Some great points were made to me about classifications and I believe Tussey Mountain and Northern Bedford are on the borderline when it comes to the big school/small school discussion. However, I did some more homework and came up with these facts. One, Southern Fulton and McConnellsburg both have tracks teams for males and females. Second, there are several schools that are in the same proximatry to Loysburg in distance that is more comparable in size that NBC competes with in football. Here are some numbers courtesy of PIAA.org and mapquest.com:

distances from Loysburg to the following schools
McConnellsburg..............36 miles
Southern Fulton..............40 miles
Fannett-Metal.................52 miles
Forbes Road..................24 miles
Hyndman.......................36 miles

here are some schools that NBC competes with in football along with number of boys grades 9-12 and distance from Loysburg to these schools
Mount Union............163 males............49 miles
Juniata Valley..........117 males............41 miles
Glendale..................113 males...........50 miles
Bishop Guilfoyle.......153 males...........26 miles
Claysburg................103 males...........20 miles
S. Huntingdon...........160 males...........30 miles

Just some facts that I found this morning. Certainly, I would tend to believe that Everett and Chestnut Ridge should find a new conference but Tussey and Northern Bedford aren't that much different from the single A schools of the ICC/Moutain Athletic Conference.
