Week 1 Playoff Thoughts and Picks by the GURU!
WEEK TEN: PLAYOFF PREVIEW (and District 6 Seeding Tie-breaker explanation)
District 6A, 6AA and District 5A Playoffs
Friday Night Games
PC @ Tyrone
War Vets Field 7:00pm
PC will be making an early exit as the Golden Eagles swoop down on coach Fetzer and the Panthers on their way to the District 6AA Championship Game. “Since his arrival 12 years ago, the Golden Eagles have been reaping the benefits. Under Franco's tutelage, Tyrone has amassed a 121-26 record with seven District 6-AA championships and a PIAA title in 1999. They have reached the Western Finals four times and in 1996; the Golden Eagles were a PIAA runner-up to Mount Carmel. They are the only District 6 team to capture a PIAA state title.” With not one but 2 Francos on the Tyrone squad, John IV is playing the part of coach on the field, look for the Panthers to hang around for about 14 seconds in this mismatch. Tyrone by 7…Touchdowns
Westmont @ FH
GH Miller Field 7:00pm
In a rematch of Westmont’s worst performance of the year in which FH pounded the Hilltoppers 30-3 this will be the second of many mismatches in this first week of the playoffs. Westmont will be physically manhandled as Bailey cranks up the running game in preparation of the Golden Eagles. Look for the Westmont players to pack it in after a nice season and for the Rangers to keep on rolling. FH by 32
Marion Center @ Chestnut Ridge
Shane Wyantt Coliseum
The wing-t works for about 5 minutes against a well coached team so look for the once beaten Ridge team to get fooled once in this game. Their only loss was to Bellwood Antis, 35-21. Too bad for MC they can’t contain the Ridge passing game. Take the home team and the over in this one. Ridge by 21.
CV @ BC
John Sikora Field
Penn Cambria High School 7:00pm
These teams are identical on the offensive side of the ball. They are both led by a great QB and a great RB. The difference is that BC has been there and done that for 8 years and CV may just be happy to be there. On paper some may argue that this is a close game. However, BC makes little or no mistakes and they take advantage of all aspects of the game. Take for instance their punting. There is no illegal man down field penalty in HS. So they allow Lauer, their best player, to run with the ball prior to his kick. He is a triple threat in that position as he can punt, run or pass the ball. You may ask why I think he is their best player? He touches the ball on every offensive play and he has 48 HS starts under his belt. When they need a first down, he runs, and runs hard. He is the go to player on Coach Sponsky’s squad. The kid is a product of his environment and the BC environment is win, win, win and win some more. Look for the CV coaching staff to put their kids in the position to win. It will be up to the players to get it done. In big games big players make big plays. If CV expects to be competitive Vince, Robert and the gang need to show the LHAC champs they belong in the playoffs. Take the 9-0 Huskies in this one. BC by 3…touchdowns.
United @ Portage
The House that Gouse Built 7:00pm
Portage should be the #1 seed as their squad is made up of students from one school district, but that is another story. Next up for Portage the Lions and their anemic offense. Don’t look for the usual let up you see after a big win. With only 1,000 yards from Mack and 700 passing from Domer, United doesn’t belong in this contest. Lions, get ready for a heavy dose of Westpac rushing. The Mustangs had over 3,000 this season and Corentti isn’t going to change much. He is a great offensive coordinator and he wins games with a mix of films and on field preparation that few schools can even fathom. Take the Stangs behind a giant line, Gathers and Fuller. Oh yes, one more thing…The Stangs have 26 punt returns this season which leads the area. They actually catch the ball and run with it, what a novel idea. The average loss of yardage when a punt is not fielded is 17 yards. Figure you force 5 punts in a game. If you don’t field them, even just fair catch them, you lose 85 yards of field position. Isn’t that what the game is about? Take the Stangs and their staff by 30 in this one.
J Town @ Bellefonte
Bellefonte Stadium 7:00pm
Oh where oh where has my little LaRod gone, oh where oh where can he be… Bellefonte averages almost 40 points per game and their only loss was to perennial powerhouse Tyrone. Look for Johnstown to have twice as many penalties as points. Bellefonte and their balanced attack of Gentzel (1200 rushing), Snare (1200 rushing and passing) and Carson (400 receiving) will dominate the Trojans. Take Bellefonte by 27
TMT @ NBC
Panther Community Stadium 7:00pm
The Panthers get a second chance at smashing the Titans as they did in week 3 (34-0). Look for the game to be a little closer and for coach Dan Foor and the Panthers to put on a show for the Loysburg faithful at Panther Community Stadium. With tough games vs. Juniata Valley, Ridge and Southern Huntingdon the Panthers are prepared to battle. Next up for the Panthers is Rockwood, on a neutral site. Rockwood is higher seed but their stadium is not up to PIAA requirements so the game will be played, but I don’t know where or when. Rockwood is paced by Eli Troup at QB (600yds) and Matt Ohler at RB (500yds). Look for NBC to win both games and play on the turf at Mansion Park on November 19th vs. Windber.
Saturday Games
#1 Windber and #2 Rockwood get first round byes in the D5 playoffs…
Berlin @ Meyersdale
Butch Stahl Memorial Field 7:00pm
The Meyersdale Red Raiders bring a 5-4 record to this rematch of the week 2 win by Berlin, 14-13. QB Matt Stahl has gotten better each week. Heck it is in his blood. His dad is the coach, a standout at Meyersdale in the mid 80s whose career was ended when he got run over in the 1985 Ken Lantzy Game, his grandfather is the famous Butch Stahl, his aunt is the announcer and his nephew is the water boy. I think his grandma lines the field. Look for the Raiders to take advantage of the home field and 7 weeks of pent up frustration in route to a win. The Berlin Mounties, whose helmet decals look like a witch on a broom stick, are still licking their wounds after last weeks game in which their defense gave up basketball numbers whilst their offense put up soccer numbers. Meyersdale by 22
Saints South @ BedFORD
“The Swaimp” 7:00pm
In a rematch of a week two loss, the Bison have a score to settle and a monkey to get off of their back. To avoid a repeat of week two and last years round one loss to the Devils the Bison are going to have to spread the field and get FORD on the corner. The kid is a gamer he was my first pick in the LHAC fantasy football league this year. This may come down to the kicking game and if Domonkos can get the KO in the end zone it will hamper the Bison. As much as I would like to see BedFORD win this one I think Sheridan, the McCort line, and defense take over and McCort moves on. What is the reward for a big win? McCort gets Tyrone at War Vets Field next Friday night. Take McCort by a Domonkos field goal…
Blairsville @ Southern Huntingdon
Backpedaler Stadium 7:00pm
Rockets will be flying, but they will be the leather ones thrown by Highberger. His 2,000k passing this year is a great feat considering that CC’s Mesaros took 11 games to do it last season. Southern is no slouch. Their only loss was to Bellwood (42-21). Take the experienced Detore and Highberger in this shoot out. Blairsville by 8
Juniata Valley @ Bellwood Antis
Victoryville Field 7:00pm
My pick to win the title is in this game and they are the home team. Although Valley is fast there is no replacement for smash mouth football and zillions of wins. Bellwood has both. Bellwood has run off 8 straight after taking one on the chin in week one vs. Tyrone (31-19). Comparing scores, Southern beat JV (37-6) and Bellwood beat Southern (42-21), I’ll take Bellwood 52-14. Winner gets FH, in Sidman if it isn’t raining…

Re: Week 1 Playoff Thoughts and Picks by the GURU!
Guru,
After i read your post, i'm highly impressed with your picks. I would first like to thank you for taking the time to do it. The only thing is Corrente isn't the offensive coordinator for the Mustangs. Larry McCabe is the offensive coordinator, Corrente controls the defense.

The important thing is this, to be willing to sacrifice at any time what you are, for what you could become.

Nice Job Guru and nice job Contain for correcting the error. I agree with all your picks here. The Mustangs should not have any trouble with the Lions this week. This might sound a little crazy but i am going to pick CV with the up-set over BC. I dont know why but what the heck go bluejays

Guru,
Great "thoughts and picks". I enjoyed reading it very much. I'd have to say I agree with every one, and my favorite phrase in there was "The Smaimp". I just laughed so loud when I read that. Great Job!

Re: Week 1 Playoff Thoughts and Picks by the GURU!
Well thought out message.
Although the winner of BA vs. JV games gets the Portage vs. United winner, not playing in Sidman. SINGLE A man....
I'd love to see a CV upset victory over BC. They'll need to return to power I football and smash the Huskies.

Re: Week 1 Playoff Thoughts and Picks by the GURU!
Thanks and Sorries go out to McCabe, the BA/JV winner and to FH. I am sure FH would rather play a single A team vs. Tyrone...
Isn't football great!!!!!!!!
