W.P.I.A.L. Basketball Terrific Ten - Boys Class (AAAA)

The 2005-2006 W.P.I.A.L. basketball season tips off on Friday, December 2nd.
Here are the Top "10" teams and players in Boys Class (AAAA).

Top Ten Boys Class (AAAA) Teams:
(final 2004-2005 regular season record in parenthesis)

1) McKeesport Tigers (21-1)

2) Bethel Park Black Hawks (15-9)

3) Upper St. Clair Panthers (22-2) *2005 WPIAL Champions

4) Mount Lebanon Blue Devils (18-6)

5) Pine-Richland Rams (9-15)

6) North Allegheny Tigers (19-5)

7) Franklin Regional Panthers (10-14)

8) Chartiers Valley Colts (19-5)

9) Albert Gallatin Colonials (17-6)

10) North Hills Indians (15-9)


The Top Ten Boys Class (AAAA) Players:

Jawaan Alston, Albert Gallatin, 6-8, Jr., F
Averaged 12 points a game as a sophomore. Played on Pittsburgh JOTS AAU team with some of the top juniors in the area.

Andrew Devlin, Mount Lebanon, 6-5, Jr., C
Was big part of Mount Lebanon’s run to WPIAL Class AAAA championship game a year ago. Will be more focal point of offense this year with the graduation of guard Geoff Kestler.

Eric Duerr, Pine-Richland, 6-8, Jr., C
Has potential to lead Pine-Richland to Section 3 title. Averaged 16 points, 9 rebounds and 3 blocked shots as a sophomore.

Anthony Harvey, New Castle, 6-2, Jr., G
Athletic guard who showed flashes of being a star last year as a sophomore.

Kellen Holmes, Ringgold, 6-3, Sr., G-F
Transferred from Geibel to Ringgold and should help the Rams considerably. Averaged 22.5 points a game last year at Geibel.

Justin Kovac, Peters Township, 5-9, Sr., G
Steady guard who will be a leader under first-year coach Gary Goga.

Mike Sherry, Chartiers Valley, 6-1, Jr., G
One of the better shooters in Class AAAA and averaged 15 points a game as a sophomore. His father is a Chartiers Valley assistant coach.

Joe Testa, Trinity, 6-4, Sr., F
If Coach Joe Dunn’s Trinity team is to make some noise in Section 4, Testa will be a key.

Ryan Tiesi, North Allegheny, 6-1, Sr., G
Has signed with Bellarmine University, a Division II college in Kentucky. A starter since his freshman year, Tiesi averaged 14 points a game last season.

Josh Trocchio, North Hills, 6-2, Sr., G
Excellent shooter who averaged 11 points a game as a junior in helping North Hills make it to the W.P.I.A.L. Class (AAAA) semifinals for the first time in school history.

8) Laurel Highlands Mustangs (14-10)

The Top Ten Boys Class (AAA) Players:

Ian Benson, Valley, 5-9, Sr., G
A starter since his sophomore year, Benson made all-section as a junior after averaging 14 points a game.

Connor Dixon, South Park, 6-5, Sr., F
The quarterback of the football team and a Michigan State football recruit. But he can hoop a little, too. Averaged 15 a game as a junior.

Zack Fetchin, Hopewell, 6-5, Sr., F
Combines with teammate James Turnley to give Vikings a nice one-two punch. Fetchin averaged 18.3 points as a junior and made all-section.

Gregg Forse, Laurel Highlands, 6-0, Sr., G
A good ballhandler and shooter, Forse averaged 13 points a game as a junior and made all-section.

Tim Frye, Mars, 6-4, Sr., G-F
A good leaper who averaged 13.6 points a game as a junior.

Paul Matthews, Greensburg-Salem, 6-4, Jr., G
Greensburg Salem is one of the teams to watch this season, and Matthews is one of the main reasons. Averaged 15 points a game last season.

Jordan Shoop, Knoch, 6-3, Sr., G
A varsity member since his freshman year and the son of Coach Les Shoop. Jordan, a quarterback in football, averaged 16.1 points as a junior.

Steve Swiech, Elizabeth Forward, 6-9, Jr., C
Some Division I colleges are looking at Swiech. Made great improvement from freshman to sophomore year and averaged 22.4 points a game.

James Turnley, Hopewell, 6-6, Sr., C
Coaches in Section 2 voted him the No. 2 player in the section last year behind Moon’s Derek Fallagher. Turnley averaged 16.3 points a game.

Dan Walsh, Moon, 6-1, Sr., G
Moon is expected to be in the hunt for a third consecutive WPIAL title and Walsh is one of the main reasons. A heady guard who averaged 12 points last season.
