Coaches Poll is Worse than My Top 25.
This is so disgusting that my top 25 gains immediate credibility.
"I think it proves what we thought it would all along, which is that the coaches who vote in the USA Today coaches' poll are thoughtful and committed to the balloting process," Grant Teaff, executive director of the American Football Coaches Association, said Monday through spokesman Todd Bell.
REEEEEAAAAAALLLY? Let's take a look at that, Teaff.
Shows how all the coaches voted in the final coaches poll...
Some interesting tidbits...
1. Two coaches rated Ohio State #10. One was Ken Hattfield of Rice. In 1996 Ohio State beat Rice 70-0 and Hattfield was livid that the score got so out of hand. He thought OSU definitely ran up the score. Never mind that OSU scored a TD on a punt return on a play where the Buckeyes only had 8 players on the field and the return man was a true freshman playing in his first college game (Michael Wiley). Anyway, Hattfield said he would never vote Ohio State for anything again and I guess he still holds the grudge, 5 years after Cooper was let go!
2. Dennis Franchione voted ND #3. ND had two #3 votes.
3. Charlie Weis had ND #4, Ohio State #5 and Oregon #9.
4. Mike Belotti (Oregon coach) voted ND #9, Ohio State #5 and Oregon #4.
5. Jim Tressel voted Oregon #9 and Ohio State #4
6. Jim Tressel had Iowa, Minnesota and Northwestern in his top 25. None were in the final top 25.
7. One coach had Auburn at #3. Tuberville had Auburn #4.
8. Gary Barnett had Texas at #1. So did Di-ck Tomey (coach at SJSU) who was DC at Texas last year.
9. SMU coach Phil Bennett had Oregon 15th.
10. South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier had Notre Dame 14th, his own team 21st, and in-state rival Clemson 24th
11. Larry Coker voted Miami #4.
12. Skip Holtz of ECU voted WVU 4th.
Now take THIS into account, after what just happened in the SEC title game:
COACH = LSU = UGA
Bobby Bowden-8 12
Phil Bennett-6 10
Mack Brown-6 12
Darryl Dickey-6 13
Ken Hatfield-8 12
Frank Solich-5 15
Howard Schnellenberger 6 12
Very classy!!!!
Now, was I right or was I right when I said that loyalty, politics, and bull**** are the only two things that go into these coaches polls? How can you possibly give this poll any weight?
