Player Classifications are released in District # 5 / 6

I understand that there are many out there that still consider any Johnstown-Altoona matchup, especially in boys basketball, to be the ultimate game.
After Johnstown played at Altoona on Thursday, the sports department certainly received plenty of flak regarding the fact that the information wasn’t in the paper the next day, but we never got a phone call regarding the outcome. The same thing happened last year when the Trojans lost to State College on the Little Lions’ court.
For the record, the Trojans no longer play in the Mid-Alleghenies Conference. They are members of the Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference. The Class (AAA) Trojans lost to the Class Quad-A Mountain Lions Thursday, 60-57, Johnstown’s first setback.
The only unbeaten boys team is Central Cambria (6-0), which knocked Windber from the ranks of the undefeated with a 54-49 victory on Friday. Chestnut Ridge and Shade also were beaten last week.
North Star (7-0) is the lone girls team with an unblemished record.
Last week, Conemaugh Valley lost to defending District #6 Class Bishop Carroll and Northern Cambria fell to Class (AAAA) Central Mountain.
Also, Joanna Nist of Rockwood and Jess Valeria of Northern Cambria became the latest members of the 1,000-point club.

Sister Donna Marie Leiden, the Bishop McCort High School principal, has sent a letter to the P.I.A.A. requesting that the the Crimson Crushers be allowed to voluntarily play in District #6 Class (AA) in football for the 2006-2007 and 2007-2008 enrollment cycle.
The Crimson Crushers have 189 males enrolled in grades nine through 11 which would put them within the Class parameters (one to 197 males).
Class (AA) includes 198 to 337 males. Class (AAA) is 338 to 541. Class (AAAA) is 542 to 2,000.
Huntingdon, which would be ranked a Class (AA) school with 312 males, has also volunteered to play up for the next two years, in Class (AAA). That puts seven schools in Class (AAA), 13 in Class (AA) and 24 in Class (A).
With Hollidaysburg (532 males), falling to Class (AAA), there are just three Quad-A teams remaining in District #6: State College (1,264), Altoona (974) and Central Mountain (586).
The Golden Tigers are the top Class (AAA) squad, numbers-wise, followed by Indian Valley (436), Bellefonte (420), Johnstown (391), Somerset (376) and Lewistown (371).
With 337 males, Forest Hills is the top squad in Class (AA), just under the Class (AAA) border. The Bearcats would be next followed by Bald Eagle Area (276), Central Cambria (274), Westmont Hilltop (268), Central (258), Tyrone (254), Penn Cambria (242), Philipsburg-Osceola (231), Penns Valley (222), Marion Center (211), Richland (209) and Cambria Heights (199).
In Class (A), Ligonier Valley has the most males with 190. McCort is next followed by Mount Union (187), Blairsville (186), Bellwood-Antis (179), Moshannon Valley (170), Southern Huntingdon (169), West Branch (166), United (153), Northern Cambria (147), Purchase Line in co-op with Harmony (142), and Penns Manor (142).
The remaining schools are: Bishop Guilfoyle (135), Homer-Center (132), Portage (124), Glendale (119), Laurel Valley (116), Saltsburg (113), Claysburg-Kimmel (109), Juniata Valley (109), Conemaugh Valley (107), Bishop Carroll (100), Ferndale (85), Blacklick Valley (85) and Williamsburg (76).
In District #5, Bedford (301), Chestnut Ridge (259) and Everett (218) are the Class (AA) schools, with North Star (175), Windber (169), Tussey Mountain (152), Northern Bedford (152), Conemaugh Township (146), Meyersdale (137), Rockwood (132), Berlin (111), Shade in co-op with Shanksville-Stonycreek (83) and Turkeyfoot Valley (42).

Central has officially asked to be released from the Laurel Highlands Conference and the league is now looking for a new member, although it may be hard pressed to do so since several other teams are supposedly looking to get out.
