Carpenter is the Toughest Kid in the World.
So I am watching the Insight.com Bowl between the 69th place Big East team Rutgers and thr 15th place Pac-10 team Arizona State. Many things made me want to blow up my television.
#2: ASU scores a TD and decides to go for 2. The QB looks around, no one is open, so he takes off around the right side. At about the two yard line he is brought down by a Rutgers linebacker. Musberger pulls his pants down in the booth and starts talking about how this QB is the toughest kid in the universe for taking a hit and popping up so fast. He went on and on about how the kid is gaining respect with his teammates for his toughness on that play. Here's what really happened:
The kid took off running, and was tackled. It was not a huge hit. It was an okay hit. The QB did jump back up on his feet... after he failed on the two point conversion. Do you know why he failed? Well, I'll tell you. He was running hard, saw the Rutgers linebacker, slowed-up, folded his head into his chest, and prepared for the hit. He did not lower his shoulder and make a daredevil-like plunge for the goal line. He slowed down, and braced for the collision. Yes, that is sure toughness. He really won me over. Can I pull my pants back up now?
