Hoops Classic!!!
Hoops Classic!!!
The Bedford County Regional Education Foundation Hoops Classic will take place on Saturday, April 8, 2006, at the Pro-Care Sportsplex behind the Bedford Wal-Mart.
At this point over 30 senior boy and girl basketball players have committed to participating in this game. A girls game will start at 6:30 p.m. with a boys game following at 8:00 p.m. The boys game will essentially be a match-up between the two District 5 hoops leagues: Sideling Hill vs. Westpac. At this point we'not sure how the girls game will be configured because of only a moderate response from Somerset County.
In addition to the main games, there will be three-point shot contests, perhaps a surprise visitor or two, a 50-50 drawing, and a variety of homemade food items.
Any proceeds generated from this game will go toward the BCREF, which helps high school students in the area pay for college classes.
Check the Gazette as well as Bleacher Coaches for complete information about rosters, coaches, officials, and the sponsors whose generosity is making this event possible.
Please PM Foghorn on BC, or call Mike Herncane at 733-2984.

Re: Hoops Classic!!!
I just hope I can get a snapshot of him riding into Loysburg in his personal limo all the way from the San Mateo Pepsi plant.
I guess the man was at the Altoona Mirror Game on Friday. He probably loved the high score the regional team put up over the Blair County team -- 125 or so, I think. I don't think the score will be that high here, even though Bedford County's the mecca of high school hoops. (lol)

I enjoyed the games yesterday, however the players were a little rusty and didn't perform as well as they had throughout their season play. Of course most of the players are well into the concentration of their current sport seasons and I know they don't want to risk injury at this point. I think the all-star game needs to be scheduled closer to the end of the basketball season than to wait this long into another season. Also, I felt that picking an All-Star team from a group of already termed "All-Stars"...was a bit tacky and in the end took away from the whole event. Other than that, I like the opportunity of watching the area stand-outs compete together.
A game of this type can't be played until the state high school season is over, which last time I checked was only a few weeks ago. We didn't want to hold the game the same weekend as the Blair County game because we had a few of the same players. Plus that was the window of opportunity at ProCare Sportsplex, which has a variety of events.
Sure the players were rusty, but I thought they also played pretty darn hard. I didn't sense anyone was trying to save himself or herself. In fact, next year before the game I'm going to ask the players to take it easy on themselves -- but when you have players who are committed to giving their all for their teams and their coach, it's hard to get them to ease up. Bedford, Fulton, and Somerset Counties might not have a slew of state all-stars each year, but as a group they can hold their own for maximum effort.
Tacky on the selection process? Well, many of these players did make local all-star first or second teams. But some didn't. 24 boys played in the second game, so picking an all-tournament team seemed natural. Sorry you disliked it. Feel free to come help us next year. We could have used some more help.
In the end we raised almost 600 dollars for the BCREF. Plus I think a lot of people who enjoy basketball had a good time. At least that's what many of them told us.

Re: Hoops Classic!!!
Yeah I thought that hammie in his "bozo the clown" outfit would be the special guest!! Yeah pretty nice honor to be the honorary captain of the regional team which smashed the Blair County team in the game I was associated with! Doug West was the honorary captain of the Blair County team, must need some prestige to be an honorary captain, I thought they would get a great Bedford HS player to be the captain next year ha, ha, ha. Letssssssss Goooooooooo Northern Bedford Panthers
I was not criticizing the selection "process" or those selected whatsoever. I applaud every one of those players...in fact they were all "All-Stars". All I was trying to say is that these players were selected to play in this event because they are the cream of the crop in our area and I found it tacky to then select an "All-Star" team from these outstanding athletes. I'm sorry that you don't understand my point...but I'm sure those not "selected" in the end felt as though they weren't "All-Stars" afterall. I think they all should have been honored and recognized as the true "All-Stars" that they are...EVERY last one of them. I would love to help out with this event next year and I'm sure there are others who would be willing to help out as well.
