Some Notes from an Old Friend

I know you bozos are really sad that I havent been on here lately, its b/c I am now relagated to dial-up temporarily and its really not even worth the effort to try and get online. Here's some notes though.

Penn State's O-line is garbage. There's no reason why Tony Hunt had 32 yards rushing against ANY team. Although I think ND still sucks and showed just how bad they really are against G-Tech, you cannot win games passing alone unless you are Hawaii or Texas Tech, who have passing offenses. Joe will always try to run the ball. Morelli looked better than I even imagined, and the receivers were very good. But you cant rely on a single-attack offense to win big games all the time. Wallace is a true freshman that had 3 big plays, all three times he touched the ball. He needs to hold on to it, though. I was pretty upset at the lack of substitutions in the secondary. No excuse why Timmons and Sargent dont get significant playing time. And there was no better way to break in Wallace (#1 DB recruit in nation last year) than against a good QB like Getsy is. I dont understand the mentality of not utilizing your depth, when you have that much talent at LB and DB. Akron is better than people want to believe, but Penn State relaly needs to tighten up on the line. I think the D will come along. Hopefully by Saturday.

Did not see the Pitt game, because I was coming home from PSU, but it sounded on the radio like it was a nice win. Not trying to start trouble, but we all know how bad Virginia really is right now. Pitt'll be bowl eligible, I'd bet.

Steelers defense looks pretty solid. I was surprised. Culpepper is acting like his typical self, terrible throws in the 4th quarter, and that coach's challenge was ridiculous. What I dont understand is why the line judge was waiting to get the TD signal from the other ref on that Miller TD. The line judge is the closest ref to the action, how is it possible that the other ref had a better view? That seems pretty incompetent. But how nice is it to have a reliable backup? I was surprised in how the Steelers played tonight, and especially with Parker and Batch.

i dont think you thought that comment out that much...GA Tech beat Auburn last year in Auburns season opener at Auburn...and then they beat Miami...they had almost everybody back...its aight though...big game this weekend...definately pumped...

Let me say something quickly about G. Tech. The Georgia Tech coaching staff will let you down time and time again. They knew how to beat Notre Dame, and we're too stupid to realize how to prolong that strategy for a whole game instead of 1.5 quarters. And people say that D-Coor. is a genius? You have to be kidding me with that. His absent-mindedness in a very, very, very, very, very simple thing to amend, cost Tech the game. Well, that plus the fact that they STILL underutilize Calvin Johnson. They had ND figured out, had that game won, and blew it, yet again. Don't EVER bet any money on Georgia Tech, no matter who they are playing, until they get a new coaching staff. They have proven time and again that they are very unreliable in big games. And putting your faith in Reggie Ball, who has been 100% inconsistent in all 9 years he's been there, is like playing Russian roulette with 3 bullets.

Hey, you make that many mistakes in a game, you deserve to get blown out.

I needed to see that performance from ND before I started thinking they were for real. Although I do think they have weaknesses and CAN definitely be beaten, I dont think theres a team in the country this season that can do it. They have too many weapons on offense and they can utilize any part of it if you stop the receivers, or the running game, etc. Like I said, they CAN be beaten, but no one in the NCAA this year has the tools to do it. I think this team is gonna go undefeated, and I think they'll win the whole thing. They just have too much on offense, and although they can be rattled, you saw how Georgia Tech (and even Penn State) couldnt play a complete game and play relatively mistake-free ball, and thats what you need to do against an offense that has that much firepower. No one can stop that short passing game; they can run that on every team this season, including USC. I was surprised, and impressed.

As for Penn State... they have a lot of young players playing, and if that's the case, you gotta play mistake-free ball to win the big games on your schedule. You saw what happened Saturday. Notre Dame's skill players are all upper-classmen. No one figured PSU as national title contenders, and on the bright side, at least it wasn't a conference game, I guess. But that performance was pretty bad, and I still think they arent taking advantage of this season (which everyone knew was gonna be at least a slight drop-off) and playing more players. They need to play those kids in the secondary so they are ready for next season. Morelli had some really nice plays, and a few diasterous blunders. O-line looked a little better, but still isnt great. Defense needs to get more push up front. After 2 games, it's gonna be tough to win in Columbus next week after what I saw in the previous 2 performances, but PSU does have a knack for playing tight against OSU when OSU is probably better than them. There's a few teams in the BIg Ten this season that look absolutely clueless, so hopefully a rebuilding PSU can take advantage of that and end the season strong.
