Love’s late TD passes spark Homecoming victory
By Philip Cmor, [email protected]
LOYSBURG — Black Panther coach Danny Foor says Juniata Valley has been like a monkey on his Northern Bedford football team’s back the last few years. Actually, it’s probably been more like an 800-pound gorilla
And, when Joey Basil scored on a 39-yard run 2:36 into the fourth quarter to give Valley a six-point lead at Panther Community Stadium Friday night, it must have felt like that gorilla wasn’t watching his calories. Northern’s offense, though, found a way to shoulder the immense weight.
John Love threw two of his three touchdown passes in the last 6:08 as Northern Bedford celebrated Homecoming with a 29-22 comeback win over the Green Hornets in an Inter-County Conference interdivisional matchup of 3-1 teams.
With just six seniors on the roster, the Panthers may have officially come of age.
“I told our kids this was contender or pretender week. If we’re going to be a District 5 (Class A) contender, we have to beat — not compete with — a team like Juniata Valley,’’ Foor said. “We showed that we can play some physical football.’’
Juniata Valley entered the game having allowed 29 points all season. The Hornets held NBC to 53 yards in holding a 7-3 lead at half.
The second half was a different story. Northern opened the third quarter with a 71-yard scoring drive, culminating in a 22-yard TD pass from Love to Ethan Boyd, in a sign of things to come. Love found Klotz from 35 yards out to tie the score with 6:08 left in the fourth quarter, then hooked up again with Boyd for a 34-yard scoring pass with 1:46 left to win it.
Northern Bedford had 260 yards total offense in the second half. Love, whom Foor said he challenged at halftime to step up and lead the team, completed 9-of-16 passes for 170 yards in the game after going just 1-for-6 for 25 yards and an interception in the first two quarters.
“We made some adjustments at halftime, and our offensive line really played well in the second half. I felt better in the pocket,’’ Love said. “Overall, we got good protection, and our receivers made some great catches.’’
The Panthers opened things up for Love with their running game. Myles Crawford rushed for 88 of his 113 yards after the intermission, scoring on a 28-yard draw.
Basil finished with 150 yards on the ground, and Shawn McCrum scored two touchdowns for the Hornets.
“I don’t really have much to say,’’ Smith said of the loss. “Our defense was terrible. We were out of position on both (fourth-quarter touchdown passes).
“We just didn’t play the second half.’’
Game notes: Vanessa Ebersole was crowned Homecoming queen, while injured Panther player Dylan Snowberger was king. ... Valley played a second straight game without Nate Paterson, whom Smith called his best player on both sides of the ball. ... Both teams are on the road next week. Juniata Valley is at Tussey Mountain, while NBC travels to Glendale.
