The Philadelphia Catholic League is poised to follow the city's Public League schools by joining the P.I.A.A.
The Catholic League stepped up its interest in joining the P.I.A.A. after the Public League schools were admitted two years ago.
Sixteen schools in Philadelphia and its suburbs belong to the Catholic League, including Roman Catholic, Monsignor Bonner, Cardinal Dougherty, Neumann-Goretti, La Salle, Saint Joseph's Prep, Archbishop Ryan, Archbishop Wood and Cardinal O'Hara.
Adding these schools would substantially increase the competition in sports such as boys and girls basketball and would mark the first time Pennsylvania had true state champions in nearly every sport.
P.I.A.A. executive director Brad Cashman said "it was only a matter of when, not if" the Catholic League joined PIAA, but he has not given a timetable for the schools' admission.
The 16 schools would be members of District #12, currently comprised of Philadelphia public schools, even though most of the Catholic League schools are located in the suburbs that make up District #1.
One problem, Cashman said, is a clause in the P.I.A.A. by-laws that ensures that District #12 is made up exclusively of Philadelphia public schools through June 30, 2008.
Catholic League schools might be able to apply for membership during the 2007-08 school year, be accepted on a transitional basis much as the Philadelphia schools were, then become full-fledged PIAA members with championship rights for the 2008-09 school year.
Schools located outside of Philadelphia would also have to apply for membership in District #1, be accepted, then apply for transfer to District #12.
Bishop Joseph McFadden, who is in charge of education for the archdiocese, has supported P.I.A.A. membership for the Catholic League schools.
If the Catholic League joins the P.I.A.A., only the six Philadelphia-area high schools in the private-school Inter-Academic League would be outside of the P.I.A.A. umbrella.

TWO FOR 4,000:@ Kennedy Catholic senior running backs Lee Plotts and Ross Gargano have both rushed for 4,000 yards during their careers.
Both runners passed the mark early in Kennedy Catholic's 41-0 victory over Farrell last weekend. They are believed to be the first two Pennsylvania runners from the same team to reach the mark in one season, let alone the same game.
Going into the game, Gargano needed 10 yards and Plotts needed nine to reach 4,000. Plotts rushed for 175 yards on 24 carries and Gargano added 120 yards on 12 attempts.
After the game, longtime Farrell coach Lou Falconi announced his retirement. His teams won P.I.A.A. Class championships in 1995 and 1996.
"I'm done. It's over," Falconi said.
Falconi's teams produced a 210-91-6 record in 27 seasons, but Farrell finished 1-9 this season.

You hit that square on the head. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
is everything. They use our kids & youth to turn a buck for their own pleasures. It makes me sick to my stomach, when I go to Hershey every year & see all those hob-nobs from the P.I.A.A. sitting in the best seats in the house (for Free). & at center court to boot !!!
I get a break from all that this year. I don't have to watch them sit there & look like dignitaries at Hershey. I'll have to watch them at The Bryce Jordan Center doing what they do best.

I would really like to see the Philly Catholic schools play some WPIAL AAAA teams. I'm not sure the name of the Kick-Off classic but for the past two years, if I'm not mistaken, at Gateway they've played some big games. In '05 did PCC play a Philly Catholic Team? St. Joe's?
Anyways, I'm a huge fan of big-time highschool football. The Pitts. Post had an article in it the other day about PCC getting into a Kick-Off classic in Ohio...I think it's sponsored by Kirk Herbstreit something like Ohio vs USA. That would be great to watch...there is BIGTIME high school football in OH as it is and adding in the top teams in the country sounds amazing. Last year they had teams from Texas, PA, AZ, CA, FL. I believe the website is OhiovsUSA.com
