Attention Pitt and Penn State Fans.
USC just clobbered Notre Dame and their overrated head coach and overrated players. USC has lost multiple assistant coaches, and continues to develop players into fabulous college football players. They lost 2 of the most decorated players in college history, as well as countless other superstars. They have young kids playing like seniors, on both sides of the ball. Now, USC is going to play Ohio State for the national championship. Through the graduations, early departures, and losses of coaches, USC has been in the national title game 4 years in a row. What USC has done during Carroll's tenure, regarding the coaches and players, is amazing.
Ohio State also lost about a hundred superstars, and has young kids playing at upperclassmen levels. Ohio State has also lost countless assistant coaches along the way. They continue to find excellent coaches to fill those vacancies and likewise for their players. What Ohio State has done during Tressel's tenure, regarding the coaches and players, is amazing.
What do these two programs have in common? Tons. But the underlying fact is this: USC and Ohio State are the two best coaching staffs in college football, are going to meet for the national title. Why? Because big-time programs like these two act like big-time programs. That is what Penn State lacks, and what Pitt lacks. They are schools that have big-time aspirations but act like small-time programs. If you want to get to that level, you have to act like it. Keeping garbage coordinators around is not going to win you a national title, and holding on to nostalgia will get you to 8-4 but never 12-0.
