Steelers coach, 49, wants to spend more time with his family
The 49-year-old Bill Cowher, the longest current tenured coach in the NFL, has been leading the Steelers since 1992.
PITTSBURGH - Bill Cowher is returning to the Pittsburgh Steelers — to say goodbye.
The Steelers will begin a coaching search Friday to replace the departing Cowher, a person familiar with Cowher’s status said Thursday night. Cowher called owner Dan Rooney on Thursday to tell him of his decision, and the team announced a Friday news conference not long after that. Cowher is expected to attend.
The 49-year-old Cowher, one of the NFL’s most recognizable faces and most successful coaches for 15 seasons, has weighed resigning since shortly after the Steelers finally won the Super Bowl in February following numerous near misses.
Cowher has talked of wanting to spend more time with his family, especially now that they are living in a new home in Raleigh, N.C., where he and wife Kaye attended North Carolina State. Cowher’s two oldest daughters are at Princeton and the youngest has only 2½ years of high school remaining, time Cowher apparently doesn’t want to spend away from her.
While Cowher would be resigning with one season left on his contract, there is no indication he would retire from pro football. He said recently he is not close to being burned out, and still likes coaching and dealing with players.
Cowher, who led the Steelers to the playoffs 10 times, the AFC title game six times and the Super Bowl twice, met with Rooney and team president Art Rooney II on Tuesday and asked for several days to weigh his future plans. There was an understanding a decision would be made quickly because the Steelers don’t want any top candidates accepting other jobs before taking to them.
While the Steelers would have given Cowher until next week to make up his mind, he decided not to make them wait and called Dan Rooney on Thursday.
Two strong contenders to replace Cowher — Steelers offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt and offensive line coach Russ Grimm — already are in place and are interviewing with other teams. The team would interview at least one minority candidate, possibly more, and talk with several candidates outside the organization.

that really sucks that he's going... he was a good coach for them... and i don't even like football.

I'm not sure about who I'd hire :?: :roll: After seeing the likes of Russ Grimm's line operation, with guys such as Max Starks & Marvel Smith, etc... & nothings done. How could he possibly run a whole team :idea: :?: :roll: Those guys are terrible (My opinion) I don't care if they won last years Super Bowl or not... :? I played on the line & I know what blocking should look like.
Ken Wisenhunt isn't much better.
We need a total revamping of the staff
Maybe take a long look through the college ranks or maybe even the Canadian Football League :?:
I didn't know much about Bill Cower, but he panned out rather well. Even though I begged to differ with a lot of what went on through the years. his motovation waas excellent in it's own right
When you keep guys on the team like Duce Staley "Shame on you"... :oops:
Maybe Myron Cope could give a go at this
I always valued his opions.
Or maybe Jerome Bettis knows something about how this works :?: :lol:
I do know that the ROONEY'S are tighter than two coats of paint & they always seem to want lots, for merley nothing :shock:
There isn't a whole lot of coaches at present, that I call qualified...
I wish Bumm Philips was still around, or maybe Jerry Glandvill :roll:
Maybe Joe Vitino could do this job :?: Oh that's right he's a basketball coach (or was) :lol: :lol:
Who ever they decide on will be interesting, that's for sure...
I'd love to have a crack at this job I wouldn't even cost as much as all these over-paid want ~a~bees.

Does Cowher have to pay the Steelers anything for leaving early and not fulfilling his contract? Let's face it. If the Rooney's would have "let him go" with a year left on his contract, they probably would have had to pay him for that year. But since HE "in a sense" fired the Steeler's from HIS life, shouldn't he have to pay the Steeler's something for not living up to the obligations of HIS contract?
