(AP) — Most of Hyndman High School's girls basketball players were in elementary school when the team last won a game against a Pennsylvania opponent.
The District #5 team beat Meyersdale 42-39 on Monday for its first victory in three years and its first against an in-state opponent since 2000. Hyndman hadn't beaten a Pennsylvania team since a 30-26 win over McConnellsburg in December 2000 or any opponent since the 2003-04 season.
The victory was the first in "15" games for Hyndman this season. Kecia Willison led the winners with a career-high 22 points.
"We knew what we needed to do and we did it," coach Todd Shaffer told the Bedford Gazette. "They did what we've been working hard on. They hustled and we had two girls play through injuries."

ANOTHER STREAK STOPPED:@ Speaking of stopping streaks ...
Elk County Catholic's 49-game winning streak ended when DuBois Central Catholic's Chris Wulderk scored with 2.5 seconds remaining to defeat the returning P.I.A.A. Class champions 69-68. The streak had been the longest for a boys team in the state.
Wulderk not only hit the winning shot, he scored all "15" of the Cardinals' points in the fourth quarter.
Elk County Catholic went 33-0 en route to the P.I.A.A. Championship last season and won its first "16" games this season. The Crusaders had not lost since a 54-48 defeat to Kennedy Catholic of District #10 in the P.I.A.A. quarterfinals in March "2005''.
The loss was Elk County Catholic's first in the Allegheny Mountain League since Feb. 13, 2003.

NEW LEADER?:@ Pennsylvania could have a new leader in career wrestling victories by this weekend.
Zack Kemmerer, last year's P.I.A.A. Class (AAA) champion at 135 pounds for Upper Perkiomen, entered this week with "178" career victories. The state record of "179" is jointly held by Connellsville's Ashtin Primus and Mount Pleasant's Donnie Ament, both of whom graduated last year.
Kemmerer could set the mark this weekend in the District #1 Class (AAA) team championships. Upper Perkiomen is the defending P.I.A.A. Class (AAA) dual meet champion.
Last year, Kemmerer was a perfect 54-0 en route to his state title — the best single-season record in state history. This season, Kemmerer won 32 of his first 37 matches.

BIG DAY FOR THE QUIPS:@ Aliquippa scored one of the most impressive victories by a Pennsylvania high school basketball team this season, beating nationally Top #20-ranked Mount Vernon, N.Y., 108-99 in overtime Sunday in Pittsburgh.
Jonathan Baldwin had "40" points and "13" rebounds, while Antonio Reddic had "32" points and "16" rebounds and Herb Pope added "24" points and "15" rebounds for the Quips. Mount Vernon lost despite having three players score "31" or more points.

COACHES PASS AWAY:@ Two successful Pennsylvania scholastic coaches both succumbed to cancer last week.
Lackawanna Trail baseball coach Paul Fearick Jr. passed away at the age of "57" while Johnstown Bishop McCort soccer coach Boris "Bo" Banda died at age "55".
Fearick coached "15" seasons at Lackawanna Trail, leading the Lions to four titles in the former District #12 in 1982, 1987, 1991 and 1994 and a District #2 Class (AA) title last year. His 1987 and 1991 teams reached the P.I.A.A. semifinals.
Fearick, who returned to coaching last year after an 11-year layoff, had a 217-82 record, including last year's 17-3 mark.
Banda was the soccer coach at Bishop McCort for four years, leading the Crimson Crushers to the District #6 Class championship game last season. Banda also coached previously at Bishop Carroll High School in Ebensburg.
