News & Notes from Girls H.S. Hoops !!!!

Post by THE CHOPS »

Ahhhh the State Rankings. And once again more watery soup in Class (AAAA). Not in the top half, but definitely in the bottom five.

Central Dauphin went 1-1 (losing to Harrisburg) but actually moved up. How does that happen? VERY good question.

An explanation is mandatory in this case. The two teams I added to the top ''10'', Downingtown East and Altoona, are teams C.D. beat.

Altoona beat Oakland Catholic at home Saturday. A couple weeks ago, CD went to Altoona after playing a very tight game with CD East Friday night and beat Altoona in convincing fashion. And the game tipped in the afternoon, less than "24" hours after a nail-biter. The body of work once again played into the equation. Make no mistake, CD is on fragile ground.

I dropped Cedar Crest after it blew a fourth-quarter lead and lost to Hempfield by one point Friday night. I only dropped them from the top "10" to a team to watch. Council Rock North I took all the way out. Why? Not only did the Indians lose to Norristown, but they lost star Addie Micir to an injury.

C.R.N. has seven losses and now the status of their star is up in the air. I decided to wait and see if she's playing. If she plays and they win a couple games they will go right back in as a team to watch.

Class (AAA) had a little movement up and down, but no new teams. Anyway, I'm very aware Slippery Rock beat a pair of top '10" teams, General McLane and Sharon, in the same week. But S.R.'s record is 11-8. They have arguably the best player in the state. And she appears to be taking over. They are certainly on my radar.

Class (AA) now has three teams from the East in the top "18". I added North Schuylkill from District #11. Of course the other two, York Catholic and Trinity, are Nos. #1 and #2, respectively.

If North Catholic and Bishop Guilfoyle, Nos.# 1 and #2 in Class (A), ever meet I would drive and pay money to see that game.

I covered the second meetings of the season this week between Harrisburg-Trinity and Central Dauphin-Harrisburg this past week. This I can say for sure, neither game was close to the level of the first meeting. Looks to me like all three of those teams played their best basketball early instead of late in the regular season. We'll see what the playoffs hold.

Patriot News' Geoff Morrow ranked Wilson No. #1 in his District #3-(AAAA) rankings this week. Why not?

This bracket is a complete crap shoot. "NOBODY" is the favorite. Any one of the five teams he ranked could have been No. #1. In terms of the state rankings, CD stayed in the top "10" for different reasons than what he has to use to judge for his rankings. I don't know if I would have ranked Wilson No. #1, but we all agree right now it's all a guess.

In terms of the Mid-Penn playoffs, barring a major upset this week it looks like Trinity will be Commonwealth 1. That means they play Waynesboro. Central Dauphin would then be Commonwealth 2 and play Shippensburg. Palmyra, Gettysburg and Lower Dauphin are battling for the two spots from the Keystone Division. The No. #1 will play Susquenita and the runner-up faces Boiling Springs.

Finally, congratulations to Hershey for making a late push to become playoff eligible. The Trojans went 3-0 last week, and now sit at 11-10 with two games remaining. One of those games is against 1-20 Steel-High. Tuesday night Hershey plays Middletown. Unless I'm missing a game on the schedule, Hershey should sneak in.
