G.C.C. Golden Again After Winning Girls (AA) Crown..............

The Greensburg Central Catholic Centurions claimed back to back Girls Class (AA) W.P.I.A.L. Championships with a convincing 47-37 win over the Ford City Sabres Saturday morning/afternoon at the A.J. Palumbo Center.
Greensburg Central Catholic used a 9-0 run to take a 14-8 lead after one, Ford City forced 7 GCC turnovers in the second to cut the lead to two at 21-19 at the half. In that quarter, senior Ashley Henderson, headed to the University of Pittsburgh, became the all-time leading scorer in Greensburg Central Catholic history with two of her team high 14 points.
In the third, the Centurions took advantage of several turnovers and some cold shooting, 3 of 13, from the Sabres, to push the lead to 33-26 heading to the fourth.
Ford City tried to make a couple of runs in the final quarter, but a 6-0 run by Greensburg Central Catholic late extended the lead to double digits.
Erica Keto added 13 points for the Centurions, Kayla Margella scored 12. Marisa Wolfe led the Sabres with 18 points. Greensburg Central Catholic struggled from the field, finishing 18 of 47, but outrebounded Ford City 30-22. Ford City was 16-40 from the field and committed 17 turnovers to Greensburg Central Catholic’s 12.
It’s the 5th title for the Centurions, with one Class (AAA) title in "1991" and Class (AA) championships in 1997, 2003 and now back to back titles in 2006 and 2007.
Greensburg Central Catholic goes to 20-6 with the win and will open up the P.I.A.A. state playoffs on Friday against District #9 runner-up Curwensville. Ford City falls to 24-3 with the loss and will play the third-seed out of District #10 on Friday.

Hopewell Cruises to Second Straight Girls (AAA) Championship..............

They say it’s tough to beat a good team three times in a season. Don’t tell that to Hopewell’s girls basketball team. The Vikings used size, talent and experience to knock off the Montour Spartans Saturday afternoon at the A.J. Palumbo Center by a score of in the W.P.I.A.L. Girls Class (AAA) finals.
The victory gives Chris Raso’s Vikings a second straight W.P.I.A.L. championship which they hope will springboard them toward a second straight P.I.A.A. state title.
Hopewell had defeated (AAA) Section #2 rival Montour 49-38 on January 8th and 67-48 on February 10th in the regular season. It didn’t take long in this title game to see little had changed with the Vikings dominance over the Spartans.
After jumping out to a modest 8-3 after the first quarter, Hopewell pulled away in the second quarter by outscoring Montour 21-9 to take a 29-12 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Montour could not get on track on offense, shooting only 24% from the field and 0-9 from beyond the three-point line. The Spartans were also out-rebounded 34-18.
Defense was the key to victory to Hopewell coach Chris Raso. “We talk about it all the time, how if you play good defense, you always have a chance. We did a really good job on defense throughout the game,” Raso said.
The Vikings were led on offense by Becky Novacek’s 15 points while Jordan Zuppe chipped in 12 points as they improved to 26-2 on the season. Hopewell begins defense of its P.I.A.A. championship on Friday against the play-in winner of the game between the District #10 runner-up and the third-seed out of District #9.
Montour’s Jordan Burkes was the only player in double figure with 13 points. The Spartans will try to rebound in the opening round of the P.I.A.A. playoffs when they take on the runner-up out of District #10 on Friday night.
