Washington probably won't earn a BCS invitation this season, but the Huskies could play a major role in deciding which teams are still playing after New Year's Day.

The Huskies' schedule includes defending Rose Bowl champion Southern California, Fiesta Bowl champion Boise State and BCS championship game loser Ohio State. Washington closes the regular season at Hawaii, a Western Athletic Conference team earning plenty of preseason BCS buzz.

Add up Washington's challenging Pac-10 competition with a brutal non-conference slate and you have the nation's toughest schedule.

Washington doesn't have a single Division I-AA opponent on its schedule and faces only two teams (Syracuse and Stanford) that had losing records last season. The Huskies' schedule includes nine teams that played in bowl games last season and six schools that won at least 10 games a year ago.

While a Pac-10 team tops our list of the nation's 25 toughest schedules, the Southeastern Conference dominates the rest of the chart with five representatives in the top 10. Even though many of the SEC schools don't play strong non-conference opponents, the strength of the league itself makes their schedules among the toughest in college football.

Regarding teams of interest in the East, West Virginia's schedule is ranked 21st while Pittsburgh's is the 23rd toughest. Penn State chimes in with the 120th most difficult schedule in Division 1 football!!!

Two things before I get drunk as hell:

1. The Pac-10 is the worst conference in football. There is 1 team worth a crap and that's the way its been for 10 years. The only reason those teams like Oregon and Wash. St. are ever ranked in the preseason is because the NCAA needs to create interest in the west-coast market. Everyone knows how Oregon and Wazzou finish the seasons. Ranked 10th in preseason and end up 6-5 with 5 losses to garbage teams.

2. Let's be sensible here, V-man. If you were to look at PSU's schedule when it was made (presumably 2-3 years ago) look at how tough it is. They play every single decent Big Ten team (UM, OSU, Iowa, Wisc., MSU, a seemingly rejuvenated Illini, and a Purdue team who is supposed to be good every year) as well as Notre Dame. Penn State lucked out again. They SHOULD have a very tough schedule, and I think they will as the season gets rolling, but there's no doubt that every Big Ten team is going to end the season with at least a loss or 2. Yeah, those teams are all a little down, but it seems like the middle teams and lower teams are UP this season. We may have a Big ten this year that is anyone's guess as to who wins it. I really think Wisc. is terribly overrated, and I think you will see PSU, UM, OSU, Wisc., Iowa even MSU and maybe even Illinois all in serious contention. Within itself the Big Ten will be great football where every game is a toss up pretty much, but no one will be in national title contention. That's my guess, at least.
