Apparently I am Missing Something.
Penn State got another verbal yesterday. This time from Washington PA LB Mike Yancich. Yancich is a 4-star prospect that played on what I can only guess was the best LB corps in PA HS ball last year, because he was right beside Andrew Sweat, OSU commit and 5-star prospect. The Yancich commit is nice for PSU, because now they have 2 4-star commits.
Both at LB.
Both of which look like identical players.
The Yancich commit comes a few days after what? The Mauti commitment. Michael Mauti, 3-star LB from... LOUISIANA... commits to PSU. That's nice. First player from LA, maybe? I think there is a family connection with this kid. But even so... what in God's name is going on here?
Penn State has 800 LB's!!!! All of which were near-the-top recruits. Mauti had a laundry list of good programs after him. He chose PSU. Yancich had good schools after him as well. He chose PSU. It's a huge compliment to Bradley that these kids are accepting the depth-chart burdens in order to play for him. None of those 3 LB commits (Zordich, Mauti, and Yancich) are guaranteed to ever see playing time. Now, if you know that there's 25 guys hounding after the same girl to go to the prom with them, is it really worth it to also fight that battle? Why not just go to West Virginia, or UCONN, or any of the quality 1-A schools that chased Mauti? I just don't get it.
I realize it is a dream come true to play for the team you want to play for. But that's just it... key-word being "play". At some point you have to set your pride aside, be objective about your chances no matter how hard you work, and take a look at whether or not your talents may not be better suited for a different school. But like I said, it's a bigtime compliment.
PSU has 4 commits: 3 LB's and an OL. We have way too many of those. Why not get commits from TWO LB's, and go sign some kid at RB, just so you have a freakin' RB guaranteed in your class. Hell, go chase that kid from Penn Cambria or someplace. A 2 or 3 star RB commit would be nice, fellas, just as insurance.
How many LB's do you need? Is Tom Bradley assembling a new defense? Maybe like a 2-8-1 formation? How about a 1-9-1?
We need cornerbacks, genius. And running-backs. And a quarterback. And a wide-receiver. And a safety. Did they give JayPa and Carrot-Top too much power over these recruiting processes or what?

Just to defend Penn State a little bit here. I mainly agree with you but also remember Joe Pa and his staff don't even look at positions they look at athlete's. A kid may be recruited as a 4-star linebacker which means he is just a natural athlete along with a good linebacker. He will come try to make it as a linebacker and if not you may see him playing DE, FB, or even TE while at Penn State. A 4-star LB may be better than most 3 star players at another position but is just rated as a linebacker because it is his best position. Look at Tim Shaw for example spent a good bit of time at DE. I am not going to critize how to Penn State does recruting they have won a few games over the years.
