A-Rod

Post by abpk2903 »

If it is possible for one player to destroy his sport this is possibly the guy to do it. Sunday during the 6th inning of a potential World Series clinching game he decide to announce that he was opting out of his contract with the yankees. Already the richest player in baseball his agent made a comment that is absolutely rediculous. He feels that A-Rod is worth 12 years $356 dollars. First off, that took out about 26 major league teams from even dreaming about getting their hands on him. Secondly, if teams have to begin to pay salaries like that (cause it will lead more players wanting this kind of money) it would destroy what is left of professional baseball. This is a guy that career postseason average is in the .100's and has never even played in the World Series (don't say it was the lack of talent around him either). If any team is stupid enough to take this player and salary they deserve to be booted out of the league. This is proof that if a salary cap isnt put in place in the next few years Major League Baseball might be in its last decade of existance.

I agree that the timing of the opt-out announcement was distasteful and classless. But, if Boras and A-Rod set the price that high and a franchise bites, all the more power to him. I know I wouldn't turn it down. It won't be his fault baseball is going down hill, its the franchises. No team is obligated to pay him that much. The franchises should be setting the market price not A-Rod, but hey these teams are willing to pay him, so good for him. He isn't the only one in baseball who is getting insane deals. Ted Lilly, Soriano, Clemons, and Beltron all have sick deals. The BoSox paid $50 mill just to have the rights to sign a player. You can't blame this all on A-Rod. The sport, owner, gms, and franchises let this happen. No team is obligated to pay him that much, but you know someone will and they can blame only themselves.

Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved.

I feel pretty certain I could pay him 356 dollars to play in Pittsburgh. Someone call the Pirates! Sign him quickly!
