The Ohio State-Michigan game is once again gigantic in the Big Ten Conference race, and two W.P.I.A.L. players will be on hand for the contest this Saturday. Gateway’s Cam Saddler and teammate Shayne Hale will make their official visits to the University of Michigan this weekend. Both have Michigan on their final list.
Saddler,a running back-defensive back, will make his college choice at a news conference Dec. 5. His finalists are Pitt, Michigan, Virginia and West Virginia.
Hale, a linebacker-fullback, has not set a timetable for making his decision. His final choices are West Virginia, Michigan, Virginia and Ohio State.
Saddler has played so well since returning from a hamstring injury early in the season. He rushed for 190 yards in a quarterfinal win against Upper St. Clair, but made a big play at defensive back when he intercepted a pass in the end zone in the third quarter. USC was leading at the time, 14-6. Gateway stormed back for a 32-20 win.
Saddler doesn’t play much on defense. He usually is inserted when the opponent gets near the end zone.
“I was getting worried when they were up 14-6 and driving,” Saddler said. “I said to coach [Terry Smith], ‘Put me in. Put me in.’ He was acting like he didn’t hear me or see me. But he finally told me, ‘Go in and make a play.’ So that’s what I did.”

What Could’ve Been ????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
Imagine how much better Woodland Hills might have been this season if the Wolverines had Saddler and Dorian Bell on their team.
Don’t laugh. Both used to attend school in Woodland Hills’ district. Saddler moved to Gateway after the eighth grade and Bell, an excellent junior linebacker, after third grade.

Riverside Surprise !!!!!!!!!
Of the "16" teams in the W.P.I.A.L. Semifinals, Riverside has to be the most surprising.
This is the Panthers’ first trip to the Semifinals since "1993", when they lost the W.P.I.A.L. championship game to Washington, 12-7.
This season, Riverside was 8-1 in the regular season, but didn’t get much respect because the Panthers played in what was thought to be a weak Tri-County North Conference.Their only loss comes from a Week No.# 7 District #5 Class team from Somerset County, The Conemaugh Twp. Indians, & with a 24-0 set back at Riverside Stadium.
Riverside knocked off Beaver in the first round and then upended previously undefeated Ford City in the quarterfinals.
Now, Riverside plays Beaver Falls in a Semifinal this Friday.

Them Again
Jeannette will play Aliquippa in one of the most highly-anticipated Semifinal matchups. This is the fifth time since "2003" that these two teams have met in either a postseason football or basketball game.
In the "2006-07" school year, Jeannette and Aliquippa played in the W.P.I.A.L. football playoffs, the W.P.I.A.L. basketball playoffs and the P.I.A.A. basketball playoffs.

Them Again II
Knoch meets Montour in a Class (AAA) Semifinal this weekend. The last time Knoch made it to the Semifinals was "1992".
That year, coincidentally, Knoch beat Montour, 3-0, in the Semifinals before losing to Blackhawk, 20-0, the following week in the championship game.

No Southern Columbia ??????????????????????????
The P.I.A.A. Class playoffs will seem awfully strange this year without Southern Columbia. The Tigers lost to Line Mountain, 22-17, in a Class District #4 Semifinal.
Southern Columbia had won five consecutive Class state championships, had been in the title game nine years in a row and "12" of the past "13".
The last time Southern Columbia didn’t make it to the state title game was "1997". But they at least made it to the semifinals that year. This will be the first time since "1993" that Southern Columbia won’t be in at least the state semifinals.

Where Are They Now?
* Former Shenango High School star Steve McNees has won a starting position on the University of Akron basketball team in the Mid-American Conference. McNees, a redshirt freshman guard, had an impressive debut, scoring 12 points in a 79-55 victory over Walsh in the season opener.
McNees scored all of his points on "3"-pointers. He also added four assists and two rebounds.
McNees is one of two W.P.I.A.L. players on the Akron roster. Steve Swiech, a freshman center, had three points against Walsh.

Basketball Time !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Today is the official start of basketball and wrestling practice around the state. Basketball season will be over earlier than any time in memory. Section games will be completed by February 1st."2008"...
The reason for the early finish this season is because Easter is early this year, on March 23. The P.I.A.A. does not want to play championship basketball games Easter weekend, so the season will be finished March 15th.

WOW, I didn't realize that CT beat Riverside. What is that all about?? Riverside beating a top ten team in the state at AA in Ford City. That's pretty impressive. Is CT still playing?
