Scrimmages for my team:
Shaler Area
Tuesday November 20 vs. Baldwin and Seton-LaSalle at Shaler
Tuesday November 27 vs. Upper Saint Clair and Norwin at Shaler
Again, Shaler Area has arguably the toughest schedule in the WPIAL...In addition to playing in a difficult section with North Allegheny, New Castle, Pine-Richland, etc. The Titans play the following in non-section:
Grove City (AAA western contender every year)
Altoona (6-AAAA power)
State College (see Altoona)
Chartiers Valley (perennial WPIAL AAA contender)
Play 3 difficult games in the Lexington (KY) 5/3 Bank Holiday Classic and open with Lexington (KY) Catholic (Ranked in top 10 in south region by USA Today)
Ambridge, Franklin Regional, and Peters Twp. all respectable programs, are also on the schedule.
Shaler will be small in size (no player taller than 6'3" will earn significant playing time), but will feature an athletic, up-tempo team that will press and run to use their quickness and athleticism to their advantage. This will be a different style than Shaler played the past 4 seasons where they won 2 section championhips, qualified for the WPIAL AAAA playoffs, and accumulated a 70-29 record, including a 16-9 mark last season that ended with a double overtime 65-62 loss to PIAA qualifier Mount Lebanon.
The Titans return their leading scorer from last season senior Dan Wirkowski (16ppg), a 6'2" 185 pound athletic, quick guard/forward, who has earned a D-1AA football scholarship from William and Mary. Wirkowski was an all-section selection last season, is one of the leading scorers returning in WPIAL AAAA, and one of the most exciting players in the WPIAL, capable of an array of dunks and smooth moves. The point guard will be 5'11" senior Ben Altmyer (8ppg, 50% 3-point shooter), another returning starter from last season.
In addition, 4 others players who started at least one game and who scored in double figures at least one game last season return. They include: 5'11" senior guard Matt Pennelton (4ppg), 6'3" senior forward Jeff Szyczpinski (3ppg), 5'11" sophomore guard Jesse DellaValle (5ppg, but will miss several weeks with mono), and 5'9" sophomore sharpshooter Dan Taylor (2ppg). Dan Wirkowski's brother, Steve, is an athletic 6'3" 180 forward who can supply support off the bench. 5'8" frosh guard Dan Schwartz shows great promise and will see a lot of varsity action as well.
Shoudl be exciting.
