Re: Common Sense
So lets forget about the fact that johnstown doesnt get that many scholarships, but lets remember all the players who did or have at least been seen by a college so that they get a chance to play at a college level. I agree that not many scouts see the football players in johnstown but like you were saying the players that are deserving of the scholarships still do get them. They get them by competeing with the top teams again like you were saying, if we try and pack all of the best players in johnstown to one team it will completely destroy the football scene we hardly have. Not only will it do that but it will be giving players scholarships that dont deserve them, say a player was playing for the best team in the nation but he himself wasnt that good the rest of the team made him look good well then he wouldnt deserve the scholarship but he still got one. The way we have our talent spread out is perfect because the players deserving of the scholarships get them and the players who are just locally good dont get them.
Boom,
The end
Boom,
The end

Re: Common Sense
Well, its a well written essay, but i don't agree with your idea. Although forming all the talent into one school would probably help to attract scouts, i think it would destroy everything that high school football means to the people in this area. If you take all the good players and put them in one school there would be no competition in the area. We wouldn't have good games like the McCort-PO game or the McCort-CC game. Personally, i would rather have competitive games in the area and a team have a chance to win a few games in the state playoffs than have a team blow out the other teams then go far in states. It seems like it would be easier to support a team that would have a lot of close games. I get bored with blowouts. And although there aren't as many football players in D1 as most would like, there are still some in there. Brad Kanuch is playing at Uconn. He played for at best a mediocre Westmont team. So teams obviously don't have to dominate for a player to be able to play for a D1 school. Also McCort isn't really a central location. Somerset would be more easily accessible if you're talking about players from the Johnstown/Somerset/Bedford area. So although your idea may land more scholarships, i think it goes against everything the PIAA stands for. It would ruin competition in the area. Rivalries would be boring. Those are what high school sports are about. They are about supporting and representing your school. Scholarships are just a perk that may happen for you.

Re: Common Sense
I believe Rugg is already attending McCort for the "scholarship opportunities"...
Scott Lewis played in 3 D6 games and 1 quarterfinal and against many D1 players he was just not someone that major colleges where willing to risk a scholarship on because his style of play might not carry over to the college level. Where was Shrey on a D-1 scholarship at? I believe he was not more than 5'7' 150, but boy could he play.
Where do you see thee Air Jordan going?

I think Artrell Hawkins has a ton to do with athletes getting recruited in this area. His younger brother, Andrew, played for McCort and continues his career at Toledo. I'm positive that Pitt took a look at him, and also saw Larod in the process. Larod making the Red-Zone players of the year with 2,000+ yards in a seson helped as well. Cruz and Lewis? Like User said, camps, ability, speed, etc. Which also tie in to the recruitment of Larod. My point, having ties to athletes at the next level, Abdulla Wadley- Hawkins at Toledo, can't hurt.
I also agree with the recent posts that one major team would destroy high school football(or possibly improve the overall talent due to not wanting to get pasted year after year- look at richland and somerset programs...lets just see if they continue without senior qbs); however, if a D1 athlete wants to be recognized, your best shot is going to McCort. Another rout is to become very, very familiar to a small D1 school in hope that others will pick up. Wandstadt seems desperate to pick up any player, give him a call! Anyway, developing a State Power in McCort would definately draw more attention to the area as well as draw even more hatred (yeah Catholics hating Catholics) from the already critical area school districts.
ITS HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL....at the rate some people are moving, it will matter what middle school or elementary school you attend!

Re: Common Sense
Just to answer some of the random questions on here....Pat Shrey played ball at Duquesne... and from my understanding "Air Jordan" probably won't be playing ball anywhere, then again that is only what I have heard
Re: Common Sense
A lot of getting a scholorship in a smaller program has to do with how well the HS coach gets the kid's name and films out to various schools. Many coaches send stats, etc to colleges when their kids are sophomores. Then they follow up with stats from their junior year. You would be surprised how many letters follow. Also if a coach has some connections with certain programs a quick phone call, letter etc can result in a scholorship. Kids also can get recognized at camps. Go to camp and run a 4.3 "40" and you will get looked at. And guys, while we have some good athletes in this area, this is by no means a hotbed of division 1 players. Let the kids play ball, let the coaches coach and promote those few with D 1 talent. District 6 isn't the best but the competition between the schools doesn't take a back seat to any conference. Lets keep it that way.

Jordon D is now being recruited by Florida, USC, LSU & Gonzaga!

Re: Common Sense
I think it was a very thought out essay, I just dont agree. Artrell Hawkins had a lot of say about getting Andy into Toledo (as a Wr might I add while he was a all-stater as a CB). NOT taking anything away from Andy. He was a great player on both sides of the ball, if that team wasnt plagued with injuries, they could very easily have advanced to the District Championship. Anyway, none of your argument holds any water and mine sure as heck doesnt, but that doesnt make either wrong, something you might want to learn...
And congrats to Jordan, I also heard Hawaii needs someone to replace Colt???

DEFENSEWINSGAME,
I do agree that Artrell had a strong influence in Andrew's journey to Toledo, but only because he taught him almost everything he knows about the game of football.("Almost everything" because Andrew also notes Coach Jeremy Burkett as a key contributor whenever you speak to him on the situation.)
But you could not be more wrong if you are implying that Andrew was able to receive a D-1 scholarship do to connections whatsoever!!!... Especially Toledo!! I say that because Andrew tells the story of how his College coaches had no idea he had a NFL Playing brother until Artrell's former D-Cordinator at the University of Cincinnati became a Coach at Toledo Andrew's Sophmore year. Halfway through the season the coach, Tim Rose, called Andrew in his office and asked if he and Artrell were cousins!!!!! Then Andrew spilled the beans about Big Bro.

Re: Common Sense
Lets get realistic people. If "Air JD gets to D1, fine, he's a decent player" and probably deserves it. But for Florida, and Hawaii, to think he's the next Tim Tebow, or Colt Brennan? Somebody's dreaming here. It ain't me.
