District 5A....pathetic
Re: District 5A....pathetic
Dragonfanz,
Thanks for the reply.
Here is the info you requested:
http://www.ihsaa.org/b-football_frame.htm
Ok, so good start. Eliminate teams with record under .500. Now what is it that you do with the holes left in the current playoff system, do you just give some more byes Week 10 or do you overhall the current state playoff setup to eliminate some of those byes that will occur, or do you have some districts start their playoffs week 11?
Also, does anyone know how the money is distributed for playoff games. Does it go to the home team, split, does the PIAA have any hand in it because with more byes you have deserving teams getting rest, but you also possilby eliminate a revenue generating game.

Thanks for the info boiler! Am I right in seeing that Indiana has 5 classes for football? Are public and private together? Looks like a pretty good system to me.
The PIAA gets all the gate revenue for playoff games I believe. The home team gets a fee paid to them for operating costs. HR can correct me if I'm wrong.

Southpaw,
5 classes for football and maybe that is how they get everyone in the playoffs. I believe private and public are together so I believe some schools face some of the same situations that are present in PA. The local catholic school in the town where I live has won a state title in football, basketball and baseball once over the last five years while always being very competitvie in each.

Re: District 5A....pathetic
Thanks boiler. The private schools tend to dominate in the PIAA as well. PA has twice the population that Indiana does so it would make sense to have more classifications in sports.

coach, i agree, allowing anyone in is stupid, BUT (now im not defending district 6 by any standards, i still stand strong that sub.500 teams deserve no postseason what so ever.) BUT how many basketball or wrestling matches can one team compete in in one day or one weekend? quite a few, football plays one game a week, therefore the limits must be more strict. basketball you can have 40 teams compete and crown a champion in less than a week.

Re: District 5A....pathetic
One With A Big Mouth (a.k.a. Gunner) has therein answered his own questions/ confusion about his comments in this topic...PIAA has granted D 5 three weeks, beginning with week 10, to conduct a District tourney....This allows them, if they desire, to allow 8 teams to enter the fray to crown their king...The Committee decided on 6, and possibly two more, so 4-5 teams could continue their season as well..... Most years 6 teams will win 4 or 5. Allowing those six gives 2 QuarterFinal games and gives seeds 1 & 2 a rest. This format does not have a #1 seed beating up on a #8, instead gives a possibly competitive 3 vs 6 game and 4 vs 5 game to get things started. The "big boys" can flex their muscles in Week 11 by hosting Semifinal games (if Rockwood was deemed fit to host). I'm sure everyone in Saxton land wished TM could have pulled out 1 or 2 of those tiny margin losses but it didn't occur.
What else would the District do in a three week tourney? Completely shut down a week and only take a couple?

or play a week 10 that doesn't count and get guys hurt?

Re: District 5A....pathetic
40 Basketball Teams in less than a week? Don't know of any tournaments that attempt that or any teams anywhere that would want to participate in that type of tourney. Playing day after day it would take 32 teams 4 days consecutive to have a tourney. The NCAA uses just over 3-weeks for their 64 teamer. Now let's look at what some people are saying on here and examine the truth:
First a copy and paste from the D6 minutes of their last meeting:
"On a motion by Kenneth Bussard and Thomas Kakabar, the District 6 will expand to a 16-team format in Class A football playoffs for the next two-year cycle. "
These minutes can be found at: http://www.piaad6.org/min100405.htm
Nothing about a 4 game minimum....there are whispers about that, but nothing at this point. There are also whispers about throwing out the rating system and NOT giving team additional points for wins over teams of higher classifications. Thus a B.Carroll win over Johnstown is the same as a Portage win over Ferndale.
Now let's look at D6 Top 16 teams this year and peek at what the D6-A tournament might look like next year:
1 Bishop Carroll 6 A 1230 8 0 0 26.25 10.63
2 Portage 6 A 1040 8 0 0 38 8.13
3 Bellwood-Antis 6 A 1030 7 1 0 37 14.63
4 Blairsville 6 A 960 7 1 0 30.75 15.38
5 Southern Huntingdon 6 A 950 7 1 0 39.75 14.5
6 Juniata Valley 6 A 910 7 1 0 42.38 6.75
7 United 6 A 820 6 2 0 23 17
8 Conemaugh Valley 6 A 740 6 2 0 19.25 8.13
9 Bishop Guilfoyle 6 A 690 5 3 0 18.14 16
10 Ligonier Valley 6 A 600 4 4 0 16.88 16
11 Moshannon Valley 6 A 600 5 3 0 27.63 14.5
12 Laurel Valley 6 A 480 4 4 0 15.75 16.25
13 Richland 6 A 400 3 5 0 17.75 23
14 Blacklick Valley 6 A 370 3 5 0 18 24
15 Claysburg-Kimmel 6 A 360 3 5 0 17.25 25.13
16 Glendale 6 A 350 3 5 0 12.5 26.75
Can someone explain to me how this is different than D5 setting an automatic qualifying number of 6 and taking the risk that all the teams will win 4-games? Does Glendale at Bishop Carroll or Blacklick Valley at Bellwood look like an appealing draw?
I for one think it's pretty hypocritical for people (not everyone....there a lot of smart, well-informed, understanding D6 people too!) to criticize D5 when their own District is about to do the same thing to an even worse degree.
Oh, we don't want to look at next year right Dragonfanz....let's look at this years AAA bracket in 6
Bellefonte 6 AAA 860 7 1 0
Huntingdon 6 AAA 660 6 2 0
Lewistown 6 AAA 410 4 4 0
Johnstown 6 AAA 390 4 4 0
hmmm....two teams that might be under .500 pending this weeks results are the #3 and #4 seeds. Under Gunner's plan, if they didn't win this week Bellefonte and Huntingdon would sit for a week and twiddle their thumbs waiting to play each other. Makes perfect sense?
One more scenario from D6....use your imagination all you 6-AA "groupies" Imagine that Westmont has a very lousy season instead of the nice 5-3 season their having and Purchase Line is way down...it's not inconceivable that in the right (or wrong) year a couple 2 win teams could be in position to capture the #8 (and possibly even #7) seed. My point is their are flaws in every playoff plan. Maybe TM doesn't look good on paper at 3 wins and in, but at least they are a 3-win team that was in all of their games and in a year that is a little bit down it's nice to see a breath of fresh air, that being TM, in the playoff field.
Think D5 system still stinks....check out D9 where they have an "open" tournament for AA (7 with 1 bye) and AAA (only 4, all make it) teams! check it out at: http://www.piaad9.org/fblet_tonkin0905.htm if you don't believe me.
Think nobody else in the state qualifies for playoffs with a losing record, let's check the mighty WPIAL:
3 "AAA" teams, one "A" squad (Avonworth 4-5) and several Quad-A's are in the WPIAL Tournament with sub .500 records. Tussey is not the only "Titans" qualifying with 3-wins as our friend W~T's school, the Shaler "Titans" are in with a 3-6 record, along with Penn-Trafford and Baldwin at 3-6 and "IN" the 7-AAAA tournament.
That being said, 6-A is stronger this year, no doubt. Probably BC and Bellwood would be favored over 5-A's best, Windber. We'll find out how the powers in both stack up this weekend when Windber plays Portage, definitely a prime contender in 6. After Windber, 5 is down a bit....Rockwood at 7-2 has the resume but their quality of opposition is suspect. N.Bedford, if they beat WB, will be 6-3 but will not have had a strong outing versus top-notch (SH, JV, CR) opposition either. Meyersdale is a sleeper and coming on strong but doesn't have a great overall record.
6 is loaded....Their Top Six teams are all VERY good and it will be a very interesting tournament to watch.
